20. C onnect TCS system electrical leads at carburetor
m o u n ted CEC valve and at tem p eratu re sw itch—position
harness in rocker arm cover clips.
21. C onnect electrical leads at rear o f D elcotron.
22. C onnect engine w iring harness at dash panel ju n c tio n
block.
23. C onnect oil pressure gauge line if so equipped.
24. Install rad iato r an d fan guard, connect rad iato r and
heater hoses, install a u to m atic transm ission cooler lines
and fill cooling system .
25. C onnect b a tte ry ground cable at engine b lo c k and at
b a tte ry .
26. C onnect pow er brak e vacuum hose a t inlet m anifold
fitting.
27. Install engine cover.
28. Bleed fro n t an d rear brakes as o u tlin ed in S ection 5.
29. S ta rt engine, check an d ad d engine coolant as required
an d check engine fo r p roper o peration.
M A N IF O L D ASSEMBLY
Removal
1. Rem ove engine cover and position o u t o f way.
2. D isconnect b a tte ry ground cable at b a tte ry .
3. D isconnect engine wiring harness at rocker cover, a t dash
panel and position so th a t it will n o t in terfere w ith
m anifold removal.
4. Rem ove air cleaner, air cleaner extension and flam e
arresto r fro m rocker cover.
5. D isconnect crankcase ventilatio n hose a t rocker cover.

. D isconnect choke ro d , fuel and vacuum lines a t carbu­
r e t o r a n d rem ove Transm ission C ontrolled Spark
solenoid.
7. D isconnect b o th th ro ttle rods a t bellcrank.

. Raise vehicle on a h o ist an d disconnect exhaust pipe at
m anifold flange—discard packing—and low er vehicle.
9. Rem ove m anifold attaching bolts and clam ps then
rem ove m anifold assem bly an d discard gaskets.
10. C heck for cracks in m anifold castings.
11. S eparate m anifolds b y rem oving one b o lt and tw o n u ts at
ce n te r o f assem bly. Transfer all necessary parts.
Installation
1. Clean gasket surfaces o n cylinder head and m anifolds.
2. Lay a straight edge along th e full len g th o f th e exhaust
p o rt faces and m easure any gaps betw een th e straight
edge and th e p o rt faces. I f at any p o in t a gap o f .030 or
m ore exists, it is likely th e m anifold has d isto rted to a
p o in t w here it will n o t seat p roperly. I f a good exhaust
seal is to be expected, th e exhaust m anifold m ust be
replaced.
3. Reinstall th e one b o lt an d tw o nuts a t the cen ter o f the
m anifold to finger tight.
4. P osition new gasket over m anifold end studs on th e
cylinder head.
5. Install m anifold assem bly b o lts and clamps while holding
m anifold assem bly in place by hand.

. Clean, oil an d to rq u e all m anifold assem bly-to-cylinder
head bolts an d nuts to specifications.
7. C om plete torquing th e in le t to exhaust m anifold b o lt
and tw o n u ts a t th e center o f th e m anifold to specifica­
tions.

. C onnect exhaust pipe to m anifold using a new packing.
9. C onnect crankcase ventilatio n hose a t rocker arm cover.
10. Install air cleaner ex ten sio n and flam e arrestor, th e n
install air cleaner and h ea t tu b e —connecting vacuum and
em ission lines as required.
11. C onnect engine wiring harness to dash panel and rocker
cover.
12. Install engine cover an d connect b a tte ry ground cable.
13. S tart engine, check fo r leaks and adjust carb u reto r idle
speed per decal in structions as required.
ROCKER ARM COVER
Removal
1. D isconnect crankcase v entilation hose at rocker arm
cover.
2. Rem ove air cleaner, air cleaner extension and flame
arrestor.
3. D isconnect all wires from rocker arm cover clips.
4. Rem ove rocker arm cover.
Installation
1. Clean gasket surfaces on cylinder head and rocker arm
cover w ith degreaser th e n , using a new gasket, install
rocker arm cover an d torq u e to specifications.
2. C onnect wires a t rocker arm cover clips.
3. Install air cleaner extension, flam e arrestor and air
cleaner.
4. C onnect crankcase v entilation hoses.
V A L V E MECHANISM
Removal
1. Rem ove rocker arm cover as outlined.
2. Rem ove rocker arm nuts, rocker arm balls, rocker arm s
and push rods.
N O T E : Place rocker arms, rocker arm balls and
push rods in a rack so they may be reinstalled in the
same location.
Installation and Adjustment
N O T E : Wiienever new rocker arms an d /o r rocker
arm balls are being installed, coat bearing surfaces of
rocker arms and rocker arm balls w ith " M o ly k o te "
or its equivalent.
1. Install push rods. Be sure push rods seat in lifter socket.
2. Install rocker arm s, rocker arm balls and rocker arm nuts.
Tighten rocker arm nuts until all lash is elim inated.
3. A djust valves w hen lifter is o n base circle o f cam shaft
lobe as follows:
a. Mark d istrib u to r housing, w ith chalk, at num ber
one and num ber six cylinder positions (plug wire)
then disconnect plug wires at spark plugs and coil
