REAR  SUSPENSION  A N D   D R IV E L IN E   4-11

N O T E : 

A ll  axle  attachments  are  im portant attach­

ing  parts  in  th at  they  could  affe ct  the  performance

 

o f  vital  components  and  systems,  and/or  could

 

result  in  major  repair  expense.  They  must  be  re­

placed  w ith   parts  o f  the  same  part  numbers  or w ith

 

equivalent  parts  if  replacement  becomes  necessary.

Do  not  use  replacement  parts  o f  lesser  quality  or

 

substitute  design.  Torque  values  must  be  used  as

 

specified  during  reassembly  to   assure  proper  reten­

tion  o f  these  parts.

Removal

1.  Raise vehicle  on  hoist,  and rem ove  rear wheels.

2.  Rem ove  tw o  tru n n io n   bearings  “ U ”   b olts  from   the  rear 

y o k e ;  split  rear  universal jo in t; positio n  propeller shaft  to 

one  side,  and  tie  it  to   th e  fram e  side rail.

N O T E : 

The  bearings  can  be  left  on  the  trunnion

 

and  held  in  place  w ith   tape.

3.  Rem ove  brake  drum   and  disconnect  parking  brake  cable 

at  lever  and  at  flange  plate.  (See  S ection  5  for  cable 
rem oval.)

4.  D isconnect  hydraulic  brake  hose  at  connector  on  rear 

axle  housing.  ( I f   vehicle  is  equipped  w ith  air  brakes, 

disconnect  air  line  at  brake cham bers,  and  tie  lines  o u t  o f 
th e  w ay.)

5.  D isconnect  shock  absorbers at  axle  brackets.

6

.  S u p p o rt  axle  assembly  w ith  hydraulic ja ck ,  remove  spring 

“ U ”   bolts,  and low er  axle  assem bly  to   the  floor.

Installation

1.  Place  axle  assem bly  u n d er  vehicle,  raise  into  position, 

install  spring  “ U ”  bolts,  anchor  plates  and  nuts,  and 
tighten  securely.

2.  C onnect  and  secure  shock  absorbers  to  axle  brackets.

3.  C onnect  hydraulic  brake  hose  to   connector  on  axle 

housing,  and  bleed  hydraulic  system   as  specified  in 

Section  5.

4.  C onnect  hand  brake  cables  and  adjust  parking  brakes  as 

specified  in  S ection  5.

5.  Reassem ble  the  rear  universal jo in t,  m aking  sure  th a t  “ U ”  

bolts  are  draw n  up  tight  and  locked  properly.  T orque  to 

specifications.

6

.  Install  rear  wheels,  remove  stand jacks,  and low er vehicle.

7.  T est  operation  o f brakes  and rear  axle.

Axle Vent

 

Replacement

Service  replacem ent  axle  housing  assemblies  are  n o t  equ ip ­

ped  w ith  an  axle  vent;  therefore,  always m ake  sure  th a t  a  new 

vent  assembly  is  installed  w hen  replacing  th e  housing.  If  axle 
vent  requires  replacem ent,  pry  old  vent  form   housing  being 

sure  th a t  entire  vent  is  rem oved.  Prick  p unch  around  carrier 

hole  to   insure  fit  o f   replacem ent  vent.  Tap  new  vent  into 
housing  using  a  soft-faced  ham m er.  V ent  should be  positioned 
in  housing  so  th a t  flat  surface  is  tow ard  centerline  o f  differ­
ential  carrier (fig.  18).

Axle Shaft

 

Removal  and  Installation

1.  Rem ove  b olts  and  lock  washers  th a t  a tta c h  th e  axle  shaft 

flange  to  th e  w heel hub.

2.  Install  tw o  1/2"-13  b olts  in  the  threaded  holes  provided 

in  the  axle  shaft  flange.  By  turning  these  bolts alternately 
th e  axle  shaft  m ay  be  easily  started   and  then  rem oved 
from   the  housing  (fig.  19).

3.  T horoughly  clean  b o th   the  axle  shaft  flange  and  the  end 

o f th e  w heel hub.

N O T E : 

A n y  lubricant  on  these  surfaces  tends  to

 

loosen  axle  shaft flange  bolts.

4.  Place  a  new   gasket  over  th e  axle  shaft  and  position  the 

axle  shaft  in  the  housing  so  th a t  the  shaft  splines  enter 
the  differential  side  gear.  P osition  gasket  so  th a t holes  are 
in  alignm ent  and  install  flange-to-hub  attaching  b o lts— 
torque  bolts  to   specifications.

N O T E : 

To   prevent  lubricant  fro m   leaking  through

 

flange  holes,  apply  a  non-hardening  sealer  (such  as

 

Permatex  Type  A   or  equivalent)  to   b olt  threads.  Use

 

care  in  the  am ount  o f  sealer  applied,  as  in  too  heavy

 

an  application,  the  sealer  may  be  forced  out  as  the

 

bolt  is  installed  and  may  destroy  sealing  effect  o f

 

the  flange-to-hub  gasket.
