GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 1972 Chevy V an and S portvan tru ck is equipped w ith a
wide range o f tubeless type tires and wheels selected according
to the tru ck GVW rating and type o f service. All Light-Duty
30 Series tru c k m odels will be equipped w ith nylon cord truck
ty p e tires. 10 & 20 Series w ith bias belt passenger car type
tires. Wheels are o f th e sh o rt spoke type.
O nly those tires o f th e size listed in this section are
recom m ended for use on y o u r vehicle. Use o f any oth er size o f
tire m ay seriously affect ride, handling, ground clearance, tire
clearances, and speedom eter calibration. To achieve best all
around vehicle handling perform ance, fibreglass b elted tires,
radial ply tires, and bias ply tires should n o t be m ixed o n the
same truck.
TIR E TREAD WEAR IN DICATO R
The original equipm ent passenger type tires on 10-20 series
incorporate built in tread indicators to assist in judging when
tires are w orn o u t and should be replaced.
These indicators are m olded in to th e b o tto m o f the tread
grooves and will appear as bands across th e tread as a visual
rem inder th a t th e tire should be replaced (See Fig. 1).
W hen th e d ep th o f tread becom es 1 /1 6-inch or less as
indicated by the bands, there is a significant decrease in
tractio n and anti-skid properties, also, the m ajority o f tire
troubles will occur in the last
10
% o f tire life.

Puncture Inspection and Repair
A t each lubrication, tires should be checked for foreign
objects in th e tread o r breaks in th e tread or side-wall. I f tire is
pu n ctu red o r otherw ise dam aged, it should be repaired using
one o f several repair kits available th ro u g h tire m anufactures’
o utlets.
TIR E IN F L A T IO N
S tandard inflation pressures for tires are listed in th e “ Load
C apacity C h a rt” in S ection O o f this m anual. These are the
m inim um required tire pressures and tire sizes for m axim um
permissible loads. M inim um tire pressures for tires o th e r th a n
those listed in the “ L oad C apacity C h a rt” can be determ ined
from th e “ Tire L oad and In flatio n Pressure C h a rt” on the
following pages, using the weights show n on the vehicle GVW
plate.
The use o f im proper tire in fla tio n pressures can affect tire
life and load carrying capacity, and m ay affect vehicle h a n d ­
ling. In fla tio n pressures should be checked at least once a
m o n th (and preferably m ore o ften ) to insure th a t the right
am o u n t o f air is co ntained in the tires. W ith regard to tire life,
to o little air pressure allows abnorm al deflection o f th e tire
causing excessive operating tem p eratu res, while to o m uch air
pressure prevents norm al deflection, m aking th e cor,d body
m ore vulnerable to ro ad im pacts.
Use o f o p tio n al inflations is allowable only w ith a reduced
load as show n in th e “ Tire Load and In flatio n Pressure C h a rt”
on th e following page.
W hen operating a t loads greater than th e o p tional reduced
load, th e inflation pressure m ust be increased to th e standard
inflatio n for full rate d loads.
