MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS
C A U T IO N : A ll fro n t suspension attachments are
im portant attaching parts in th a t th ey could affect
the performance o f vital components and systems,
and/or could result in major repair expense. They
must be replaced w ith parts of the same part
numbers or w ith equivalent parts if replacement
becomes necessary. Do not use replacement parts of
lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values
must be used as specified during reassembly to
assure proper retention o f these parts.
WHEEL BEARINGS—CHECK ADJUSTM ENT
C A U T IO N : Tapered roller bearings are used on all
series and th ey have a slightly loose feel when
properly adjusted. This differs fro m ball bearings
which may be pre-loaded w ith o u t adverse effect. A
design feature o f fro n t wheel taper roller bearings is
th at they must N E V E R be pre-loaded. Damage can
result by the steady thrust on roller ends which
comes fro m pre-loading.
1. Raise car and su p p o rt a t fro n t low er co n tro l arm .
2. Spin w heel to check for unusual noise.
3. If bearings are noisy o r excessively loose, th e y should be
cleaned and inspected prior to adjustm ent.
N O T E : To check fo r loose bearings, grip the tire at
the to p and botto m and move the wheel assembly in
and o u t on the spindle. M ovem ent greater than
.0 0 8 " indicates a loose bearing. If necessary to

ADJUSTM ENT
1. Raise car and su p p o rt a t fro n t low er co n tro l arm .
2. Rem ove hub cap o r w heel disc from wheel.
3. Rem ove dust cap fro m hub.
4. Rem ove c o tte r pin fro m spindle and spindle nut.
5. A djust bearing as show n in Fig. 2.

. Insert new c o tter pin and b e n d ends against n ut. Cut o ff
ex tra length to ensure ends will n o t in terfere w ith dust
cap.
7. Install dust cap on hub.
8
. Install hub cap or w heel disc.
9. L ow er car to ground.
10. R epeat this procedure for th e o th e r wheel.
FRO NT A L IG N M E N T DESCRIPTION
S atisfactory vehicle o p era tio n m ay occur over a wide range
o f fro n t end (w heel) alignm ent settings. N evertheless, should
settings vary b ey o n d certain tolerances, readjustm ent o f align
m en t is advisable. The specifications sta te d in colum n 1 o f the
applicable vehicle chart in th e specifications section o f this
m anual should be used b y ow ners, dealers and repairm en as
guidelines in vehicle diagnosis eith er for repairs u nder th e new
vehicle w arran ty or for m aintenance service at cu sto m er’s
request. These specifications provide an acceptable all-around
operating range in th a t th e y prevent abnorm al tire wear caused
b y wheel alignm ent.
G overnm ental Periodic M otor Vehicle inspection program s
usually include w heel alignm ent am ong item s th a t are in
spected. To provide useful in fo rm atio n for such inspections,
th e specifications stated in colum n

o f th e aforesaid appli
cable chart are given and these are well w ithin th e range o f safe
vehicle o peration.
In th e event th e actual settings are b ey o n d the specifi
cations set fo rth in colum n

or
2
(whichever is applicable), or
w henever fo r o th e r reasons th e alignm ent is being reset,
Chevrolet recom m ends th a t th e specifications given in colum n
3 o f the aforesaid applicable chart be used.
Alignment Preliminary Steps
Several d ifferen t types o f m achines are available for check
ing all th e factors o f fro n t end alignm ent. The instructions

FINGER TIGHT.
6. WHEN THE BEARING IS PROPERLY
ADJUSTED THERE WILL BE FROM
. 0 0 1 - . 0 0 8 INCHES END-PLAY
(LOOSENESS).
