4. L ocate th e index slot in the colum n ja ck e t w ith the
pro tru sio n o n th e clutch and brake pedal sup p o rt (fig.
13).
5. Loosely install th e colum n dash b rack et and screws.

. Push th e colum n dow n until the steering shaft flange
b o tto m s on the plastic spacers o n the flexible coupling
and then to rq u e the dash bracket screws.
7- Remove the plastic spacer from th e alignm ent pins using a
wire h o o k (fig. 9). Check th e rag jo in t to steering shaft
f la n g e c l e a r a n c e ( . 2 5 0 ” t o .3 2 5 ” ), if n o t w ithin
specifications, th e dash b rack et screws m ust be loosened
and th e colum n raised o r low ered as required. R etorque
th e b rack et screws.
C A U T IO N :
T he alignment pin plastic spacers must
be removed before the vehicle can be driven.

. Push the to e pan seal to th e to e pan , install and torque
the m o u n tin g screws.
9.
All Columns—
C onnect th e directional signal sw itch wiring
harness.
Autom atic Columns—
C onnect th e co n d u c to r tu b e (fo r
transm ission in d icato r) to the in stru m en t panel.
10. Install the steering w heel as o u tlin ed u nder “ Steering
W heel—In stallatio n .”

. C onnect the transm ission linkage.
12. C onnect the b a tte ry ground cable.
T IL T COLUM N
The u p p er bearings o n th e tilt colum n are spun into the
bearing housing assem bly. I f th e bearings indicate need o f
replacem ent, th e entire bearing housing m ust be replaced. See
“ T ilt Steering C olum n—Bearing Housing Assembly Removal
(C olum n in V ehicle)” for th e co rrect replacem ent procedure.
T ilt Columns Lower Bearing
Removal
1. P ry o ff th e low er bearing rein fo rcem en t clip and rem ove
th e clip and reinforcem ent.
2. Rem ove th e low er bearing and ad a p te r as an assem bly.
Press th e bearing o u t o f th e adapter.
Installation
1. Press th e new bearing in to th e ad ap ter and install the
low er bearing and ad ap ter o n to th e low er end o f th e
steering sh a ft and place in position in th e low er end o f
th e colum n, aligning th e w ide tab o f th e adapter w ith th e
open slot in th e colum n.
2. Place th e low er bearing rein fo rcem en t over the end o f th e
colum n (open positio n o f rein fo rcem en t to open slot in
colum n) an d install th e rein fo rcem en t clip. Make sure all
th ree tabs o f th e clip are fully engaged w ith the slots in
the rein fo rcem en t and colum n.
T ilt Column Bearing Housing Assembly
Removal (Colum n in V eh icle)—Fig. 14
1. D isconnect th e b a tte ry ground cable.
2. Rem ove th e steering w heel as o u tlin ed o n Page 9-4.
3. Rem ove th e directional signal sw itch.
4. Colum n S hift Models — Using a suitable size p u n ch , drive
o u t th e shift lever pivot pin and rem ove th e shift lever.
5. Install the tilt release lever and place th e colum n in the
fuE “ u p ” position. Remove th e tilt lever spring and
retain er using a screwdriver th a t ju st fits in to the slot
opening. Insert th e screwdriver in to th e slot, push in
appro x im ately 3 /1 6 ” , ro tate clockwise approxim ately

tu rn u n til th e retainer ears align w ith the grooves in
th e housing and rem ove th e retainer and spring.

. Remove th e steering shaft bearing lo c k n u t using socket
J-22599. Rem ove th e u pper bearing race seat and race.
7. Rem ove th e tw o bearing housing pivot pins using Tool
J-21854.

. Pull up o n the tilt release lever (to disengage the lock
shoes) and rem ove th e bearing housing.
I f th e bearing housing is being replaced o r it is necessary to
disassemble th e bearing housing, proceed as follow s:
a.
Press th e u p p er and low er bearings o u t o f th e
housing.
b.
Using Puller J-5822 and Slide Ham m er J-2619, pull
th e bearing races fro m th e housing.
c.
Rem ove th e tilt release lever.
d.
Drive o u t th e shoe release pivot pin using Tool
J-22635 o r a suitable pun ch . Rem ove th e lever
spring and rem ove th e wedge.
e.
Using a suitable size punch, drive o u t th e lock shoe
retaining pin. Rem ove th e shoes and shoe springs.
I f th e u p p er steering shaft, low er steering shaft, o r centering
spheres are being rem oved, proceed as follows:
9. Rem ove th e steering shaft assembly th rough th e upper
en d o f the colum n. I f it is necessary to disassemble th e
shaft, pro ceed as follows:
a.
To rem ove th e low er steering shaft first disconnect
th e sh a ft a t th e p o t jo in t coupling clam p.
b.
T urn th e u p p er shaft 90° to th e low er shaft and
slide th e u p p er shaft and centering spheres from th e
low er shaft.
c.
R o tate the centering spheres 90° an d rem ove the
centering spheres an d preload spring from th e upper
shaft.
I f th e bearing housing su p p o rt is being replaced, proceed as
follows:
10. Rem ove th e fo u r bearing housing support screws and
rem ove th e su p p o rt.
Assembly
1. Assemble th e steering shaft as follows:
a.
L ubricate and assemble the centering spheres and
preload spring.
b.
Install th e spheres in to the upper (sh o rt) shaft and
ro ta te 90°.
c.
Install the low er shaft 90° to the u p p er shaft and
over th e centering spheres. Slowly straighten the
shafts while com pressing th e preload spring.
