PITM AN SH A FT SEAL
If p itm an shaft seal leakage occurs, the steering gear m ust be
com pletely rem oved fro m th e vehicle to perform th e replace
m ent procedure.
Replacement
1. Rem ove the steering gear as outlined u n d er “ Steering
G ear-R em oval” .
2. Loosen the lash adjuster lo ck n u t and tu rn the lash
adjuster a few tu rn s counter-clockw ise.
3. Pull side cover and p itm an shaft from gear housing as a
u n it. D o n o t separate side cover from p itm an shaft.
4. P ry the pitm an sh a ft seal from gear housing using a screw
driver being careful n o t to damage housing bore.
C A U T IO N :
Inspect the lubricant in the gear fo r
contam ination. If the lubricant is contam inated in
any way, the gear must be com pletely overhauled as
outlined in the 1 9 7 2 Overhaul M anual—Section 9.
5. C oat the new seal w ith gear lubricant and install in the
housing using a suitable size socket.
6
. Pack as m uch new Steering Gear L ubricant (m eeting GM
Specification G M 4673M ) in to the ends o f th e housing as
it will h old w ith o u t falling o u t the pitm an shaft opening.
7. Place a piece o f tape over th e splined end o f the pitm an
shaft and then low er th e p itm an shaft and side cover into
th e housing.
N O T E :
Before the pitm an shaft is all the w ay into
the housing, more lubricant can be added in the
center cavity. D O N O T O V E R -F IL L the gear hous
ing.
8
. Install a new side cover gasket, align the side cover on the
gear housing, install and to rq u e th e side cover screws.
9. R einstall the steering gear assembly as o u tlin ed under
“ Steering G ear—In stallatio n ” .
C A U T IO N : The pitm an arm to pitm an shaft nut,
steering gear to fram e bolts and steering coupling to
steering shaft and w orm shaft fastener are im portant
a t t a c h in g p a rts in t h a t they could affect the
performance of vital components and systems, and/or
could result in m ajor repair expense. They must be
replaced w ith one o f the same part number or w ith an
equivalent part if replacem ent becomes necessary. Do
n o t use a replacement part o f lesser q uality or
substitute design. Torque values must be used as
s p e c if ie d d u r in g re a s s e m b ly to assure proper
retention o f this part.
STEERING COLUMN
