FRO NT SUSPENSION 3-3
furnished w ith each particular m achine should be follow ed. In
all cases, how ever, checks should be m ade o n a level surface
w ith th e vehicle at curb weight.
Before checking an d adjusting alignm ent, such com ponents
as wheel bearings, spring h eight, tie rods, steering gear, shock
absorbers and tire inflation should be inspected and corrected
w here necessary.
Caster and Camber—Figure 3
Positive caster is th e a m o u n t in degrees o f th e backw ard tilt
o f th e knuckle. Positive cam ber is the am o u n t in degrees that
th e fro n t wheels are tilte d o u tw ard a t th e to p fro m a vertical
position. B oth angle adjustm ents are necessary for steering
stability and safe vehicle handling.
C aster and cam ber adjustm ents are m ade b y m eans o f shims
located b etw een th e u p p er co n tro l arm shaft and th e m ounting
b rack et a tta c h e d to th e suspension crossm em ber.
Measure caster and cam ber as follow s (refer to F igure 3):

10-30 Series
All caster specifications are given assum ing a fram e angle o f
zero. T herefore, it will be necessary to know th e angle o f th e
fram e (w hether “ u p ” in rear or “ d o w n ” in rear) before a
co rrec ted caster reading can be d eterm ined. Camber and to e
can be read “ as is” fro m the alignm ent equipm ent.
How to Determine Caster
1. W ith th e vehicle o n a level surface, determ ine th e fram e
angle, “ B” in Fig. 5, using a bubble p ro tra c to r or
clinom eter.
2. D raw y o u rself a graphic as in Fig. 5 th a t is representative
o f the fram e angle (either “ u p ” in rear or “ do w n ” in
rear).
Fig. 3 —Fron t End A lignm ent
D eterm ine th e caster angle fro m th e alignm ent equip
m en t an d draw a line th a t is representative o f th e caster
reading.
To determ ine an “ actual (co rrected ) caster reading” w ith
various fram e angles and caster readings, one o f th e
follow ing rules apply:
a.
A
"d ow n in rear"
fram e angle m ust be
subtracted
fro m a
positive
caster reading.
b.
An
"up in rear"
fram e angle m ust be
added
to a
positive
caster reading.
c.
A
"d ow n in rear"
fram e angle m ust be
added
to a
negative
caster reading.
