N O T E : Whenever new valve lifters are being
installed, coat fo o t o f valve lifters w ith " M o ly k o te "
or its equivalent.
2. Install push rod covers, using new gaskets, an d torq u e to
specifications.
3. Install d istrib u to r, positioning ro to r to num ber one
cylinder position, th e n connect prim ary lead at coil.
4. Install and adjust valve m echanism as o utlined.
5. A djust ignition tim ing an d carb u reto r idle speed and
m ix tu re.
V A L V E STEM O IL SEAL A N D /O R V A L V E SPRING
Replacement
1. Rem ove rocker arm cover as outlined.
2. Rem ove spark plug, rocker arm an d push rod on the
cylinder(s) to be serviced.
3. Install air line ad a p te r T ool J-23590 to spark plug p o rt
an d apply com pressed air to the spark plug hole to hold
the valves in place.
4. Using T ool J-5892 to com press the valve spring, remove
th e valve locks, valve cap, valve shield an d valve spring
an d dam per (Fig.
6
L).
5. R em ove th e valve stem oil seal.

. To replace, set the valve spring and dam per, valve shield
an d valve cap in place. The closely coiled end o f the
spring is installed against th e cylinder head. Com press the
spring w ith T ool J-5892 an d install oil seal in the lower
groove o f th e stem , m aking sure th e seal is flat and n o t
tw isted.
N O T E : A light coat o f oil on the seal w ill help
prevent twisting.
7. Install th e valve locks and release th e com pressor tool,
m aking sure th e locks seat properly in the u pper groove
o f th e valve stem .
N O T E : Grease may be used to hold the locks in
place while releasing the compressor to ol.
8
. Install spark plug and torque to specifications.
9. Install and adjust valve m echanism as outlined.
C Y LIN D E R HEAD ASSEMBLY
Removal
1. Rem ove m anifold assem bly as outlined.
2. Rem ove valve m echanism as outlined.
3. D rain cooling system (block).
4. Rem ove fuel and vacuum line from retaining clip at wdter
o u tle t then disconnect wires from tem p eratu re sending
units.
5. D isconnect u pper rad iato r hose a t w ater o u tle t housing
an d b a tte ry ground strap a t cylinder head.

. Rem ove coil.
7. Rem ove cylinder head bolts, cylinder head and gasket.
Place cylinder head on tw o blocks o f w ood to prevent
damage.
Installation
C A U T IO N : The gasket surfaces on both the head
and the block must be clean o f any foreign m atter
and free o f nicks or heavy scratches. Cylinder bolt
threads in the block and threads on the cylinder
head bolt must be cleaned. (D irt w ill affect bolt
torque.) Do N o t use gasket sealer on composition
steel asbestos gaskets.
1. Place the gasket in position over the dow el pins w ith the
bead up.
2. Carefully guide cylinder head into place over dowel pins
and gasket.
3. C oat threads o f cylinder h ea d b o lts w ith sealing com ­
p o u n d and install finger tight.
4. T ighten cylinder head b o lts a little at a tim e in the
