N O T E : The position o f the pinion and flange was
previously marked so th a t reinstallation may be
made w ith flange and pinion in same relative posi­
tion .
C A U T IO N : Do not a tte m p t to hamm er flange
onto pinion shaft. T o do so w ill damage ring gear
and pinion.
13. Pack the cavity betw een end o f pinion splines and pinion
flange w ith a non-hardening sealer (such as Perm atex
Type A or equivalent) prior to installing n u t on pinion.
14. Install a new n u t on pinion shaft. T ighten n u t to remove
end play and continue altern ately tightening in small
increm ents and checking preload w ith torq u e w rench
u n til it is the same as th a t recorded in Step 4.
15. Reinstall propeller shaft to com panion flange in same
position as m arked in Step 3. R einstall rear brake drum s
and wheels.
N O T E : This propeller shaft to pinion flange fas­
tener is an im p ortan t attaching part in th at it could
affect the perform ance o f vital components and
systems, an d /o r could result in major repair expense.

It must be replaced w ith one o f the same part
number or w ith an equivalent part if replacement
becomes necessary. Do not use a replacem ent part
of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values
must be used as specified during reassembly to
assure proper retention o f this part.
16. Low er vehicle and rem ove from hoist.
Positraction Differential Unit
T he optio n ally available P o sitractio n differential u n it is
installed in the conventional carrier to replace the standard
differential unit.
Service procedures for the P ositraction equipped axle are
the same as on a conventional axle excep t for the “ on the
vehicle ch eck ” .
On the Vehicle Check
I f vehicle is equipped w ith a m anual transm ission, shift
transm ission into neutral.
1. Raise rear o f vehicle until wheels are o f f the ground,
rem ove one w heel and tire assem bly.
2. A ttach A dapter J-5748 to axle shaft flange and install a
1/2"-13 bolt in to ad ap ter (fig. 16).
3. W ith wheel and tire assem bly still on vehicle held firm ly
to prevent turning, m easure to rq u e required to rotate
opposite axle shaft w ith a 0-150 lb. to rq u e w rench
attac h ed to J-5748. T orque should be 7 0 ft. lbs. m ini­
m um new, and no less than 4 0 ft. lbs. if used.
