Removal
1. Rem ove valve lifters as outlined.
2. Rem ove crankcase fro n t cover as outlined.
3. Rem ove grille as outlined in Section 13.
4. Rem ove fuel p u m p as o u tlin ed in S ection

5. Align tim ing gear m arks th e n rem ove th e tw o cam shaft
th ru st plates screws by w orking th ro u g h holes in the
cam shaft gear (Fig. 19L).

. Rem ove th e cam shaft and gear assem bly by pulling it out
th rough th e fro n t o f th e block.
N O T E : Support camshaft carefully when removing
so as not to damage camshaft bearings.
Installation
1. Install the cam shaft and gear assem bly in the engine
block, being careful n o t to dam age cam shaft bearings or
cam shaft.
2. T urn crankshaft and cam shaft so th a t th e valve tim ing
m arks on th e gear te e th will line up (Fig. 19L). Push
cam shaft in to position. Install cam shaft th ru st plate-to-
block screws and to rq u e to specifications.
3. C heck cam shaft and crankshaft gear ru n out w ith a dial
indicator (Fig. 20L ). The cam shaft gear run o u t should
n o t exceed .0 0 4 ” and th e cran k sh aft gear run o u t should
not exceed .0 0 3 ” .
4. If gear run o u t is excessive, th e gear will have to be
rem oved an d any burrs cleaned from the shaft o r th e gear
will have to be replaced.
5. Check th e backlash betw een th e tim ing gear te e th w ith a
dial in d icato r (Fig. 21L). The backlash should be n o t less
than .0 0 4 ” no r m ore th a n .0 0 6 ” .

7. Install grille as o u tlin ed in S ection 13.

. Install crankcase fro n t cover as outlined.
9. Install valve lifters as o utlined.

T IM IN G GEARS
Replacement
With cam shaft rem oved, crankshaft gear m ay be rem oved
using Tool J-8105 (Fig. 22L ). To install crankshaft gear use
Tool J-5590 (Fig. 23L). F or cam shaft gear replacem ent, refer
to “ C am shaft D isassem bly” in the Chassis Overhaul Manual.
FLYW HEEL
Removal
1. Rem ove transm ission a n d /o r clutch housing and clutch
from engine.
2. Rem ove flyw heel retaining bolts and rem ove flywheel.
Installation
1. Clean the m ating surfaces o f flyw heel and crankshaft to
m ake certain there are no burrs.
