Reverse Flushing
Reverse flushing should alw ays be accom plished a fte r the
system is th o ro u g h ly cleaned as o u tlin ed above. Flushing is
accom plished th ro u g h th e system in a directio n opposite to
th e norm al flow . This ac tio n causes th e w ater to get behind
th e corrosion deposits and force th e m o ut.
Radiator
1. Rem ove th e rad ia to r u p p er an d low er hoses and replace
th e rad iato r cap.

4. C ontinue this flushing u n til th e w ater from th e lead-away
hose runs clear.
Heater Core
1. Rem ove w ater o u tle t hose fro m h ea te r core pipe.
2. Rem ove inlet hose fro m engine connection.

tak en w hen applying air pressure to prevent damage to
th e core.
Fan Belt Adjustment
1. Loosen b olts at D elcotron m ounting.
2. Pull D elcotron aw ay from engine u n til desired tension
reading is o b tain ed w ith a strand tension gauge. Refer to
“ Engine T une Up S pecifications.”
3. T ighten all D elco tro n b olts securely.
Radiator Cap
The rad ia to r cap should be washed w ith clean w ater and
pressure checked a t regular tune-up intervals. Inspect rubber
seal on cap for tears or cracks. Install rad ia to r cap on tester
(Fig. 4). If th e pressure cap will n o t hold pressure or does not
release a t th e p ro p er pressure, replace th e cap.
Thermostat
The th e rm o stat consists o f a restric tio n valve ac tu a ted b y a
th erm o static elem ent. This is m o u n te d in th e housing at the
cylinder head w ater o u tle t above th e w ater pum p. T herm ostats
are designed to o pen an d close a t p redeterm ined tem peratures
and if n o t o perating properly should be rem oved and tested as
