4.1.7 Pumps
Reagents and feed solution are added via four peristaltic pumps.
Each culture vessel has four pumps installed in the standard con-
figuration. The pumps are driven by stepper motors.
The motor shafts of the pumps are located at the bottom of the
front side of the basic unit. The default direction of rotation of the
motor shafts is anti-clockwise. The pumps can be operated manu-
ally with a rocker switch located above the motor shafts. They are
labelled from left to right as follows:
"Acid"
"Base"
"AF" (antifoam)
"Feed"
When the basic unit is switched on, the pumps can be operated
manually with the rocker switch as follows:
Press the rocker switch to the right side and hold:
The motor shaft rotates anti-clockwise.
Press the rocker switch to the left side and hold:
The motor shaft rotates clockwise.
The autoclavable pump heads are plugged into a mounting plate.
They are labelled with the name of the pump, similar to the motor
shafts.
The pump heads and the mounting plate can be simply pushed on
or pulled off the motor shafts.
A transparent cover plate made of Plexiglas (coloured red in the il-
lustration on the left) can be inserted into the holder of the mount-
ing plate. It provides protection during operation.
NOTICE!
The cover plate cannot be autoclaved.
