SSL and HTTPs
SSL and HTTPs
Definition
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and HyperText Transfer Protocol secure (HTTPs) are
two protocols that help to make the communications on the Internet safer. SSL uses
digital certificates.
When a client machine connects to a web server that can provide a valid certificate,
an SSL connection starts. The Océ Smart Imager uses a default digital certificate that
you cannot change. The certificate expires after 10 years.
SSL is a protocol that enables secure communication on an insecure network, for
example the Internet. SSL uses keys to encrypt and decrypt the data that is
transferred over the SSL connection. The SSL connection uses two keys, a public
encryption key and a private encryption key, to render the information on the Internet
illegible for other users. The public key is published. The corresponding private key
is kept secret. The data encrypted with the public key on the client can be decrypted
only with the private key on the web server. The encryption strength refers to the size
of the keys to perform the encryption. Generally, longer keys provide stronger
encryption. The key size is measured in bits. This information is then sent over the
Internet in a safe way.
Note:
If you want to disable HTTPs and use HTTP, you must first set the security
level to 'Normal'. Then you can change the protocol to use.
The connection to HTTPs
Another function of SSL is securing HTTP communication between the client and a
web server. The secure version of HTTP over SSL is called HTTPs. HTTPs transmits
separate messages securely. Therefore, it is necessary that SSL creates a secure
connection and runs with the URL scheme https:// instead of http://. The web server
automatically changes the URL to https:// when HTTPs is configured on the system.
The status bar of your browser also displays a gold padlock. You can double-click
the gold padlock to get information about the current certificate (or simple click in
Microsoft
®
Internet Explorer
®
7).
You can use HTTPs or HTTP to access and manage the settings in Océ VarioPrint
®
2100/2110 Settings Editor. When the security level of the Océ Smart Imager is
'High', HTTPs is enabled. Only HTTPs is then used.
