Chapter 11
Optical Network Leveling
This chapter describes how to check and set the optical power levels on a net-
work link. It contains the following sections:
Introduction , which describes this document's objectives.
Audience , which tells you who this document is intended for.
Specialized Knowledge Required , which tells you about special knowledge
required to do optical power leveling such as laser safety standards, expected
trainings and experiences of personnel.
Associated Documentation , which lists the documents required to do network
leveling.
Precautions , which describes important safety information.
Measuring the Network Fiber Attenuation , which describes how to measure and
level a network line considering attenuation.
Measuring Unamplified End-to-End Connections , which describes how to mea-
sure unamplified end-to-end connections.
Measuring and Leveling Amplified Lines , which describes how to measure
amplified lines.
Introduction
This procedure is to ensure that
• all network receivers get enough optical input power,
• all network receivers are not overdriven or even damaged by excessive
input power,
• all network connections are working correctly.
After you have completed the procedures described in this chapter you will be
ready to configure the NE prior to testing its operation.
