Each optical module can be inserted into any 5HU shelf slot without the use of a
tool. All optical modules use captive mounting screws (knurled screws) on their
faceplates to secure the device in the shelf slots.
The module inventory data stored in the EEPROM is accessible from the man-
agement system. When auto-provisioning is enabled, the optical module will be
entered into the NE database with default parameters.
For specific information about the optical modules, refer to the
Hardware
Description
and
Module and System Specification
.
Equipment Required
Before starting the procedure, ensure the following is available.
•
Optical module to be installed
•
ESD-preventive wrist strap or other personal grounding device
•
Suitable grounded surface or an antistatic mat for placing the optical module
Installation Procedure
It is assumed that you are familiar with handling optical modules, and are aware
of the precautions that should be taken to avoid damage to the equipment. A
summary of how to handle optical modules is provided in the
Maintenance and
Troubleshooting Manual, Chapter 1
.
To install an optical module into a shelf slot, several tasks must be completed.
Some tasks are detailed in sub-tasks. Pay attention to the safety notices and
additional information that are given below.
Procedure
Step 1
Read the installation plan to get information about:
•
the module type that is to be installed
•
the shelf, which is to hold this module
•
the slot, which this module is to be inserted in.
Step 2
Attach a wrist strap to your bare wrist and fasten the earthing cable
onto the ESD grounding point on the shelf (if available) or to a bare
metal surface onto the rack.
CAUTION
Only Service Personnel or suitably qualified personnel are allowed to
install optical modules.
Risk of electrostatic discharge!
To prevent damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD)
•
take standard anti-static precautions when handling optical mod-
ules.
•
wear an ESD wrist strap or use a similar individual grounding
device when installing optical modules.
