LEDs and display of “arp” in the entry prompt
If you are not using a direct connection between the PC and the gateway
there may be an address conflict. You have just configured a gateway
under the IP address 192.168.99.253, e.g., and wish to configure a second
gateway under the same IP address shortly thereafter. The ARP cache for
assigning MAC addresses to IP addresses on your PC prevents you from
reaching the second gateway. In this case you have to delete the ARP clip-
board. You can wait awhile; some Ethernet cards allow you to briefly
disconnect the line or you can enter a delete command. Alternatively you
can also assign the desired MAC address statically.
To do so, right-click with the mouse in the Windows Start menu on the

entry. Select the

context command. Confirm the query of the user account
control with
Next
to open the entry prompt window (see screen shot
above the previous paragraph). Read the MAC address off the type label
of the gateway. You can statically assign the MAC address (written sepa-
rated by dashes) using the following command:
arp -s 192.168.99.254 xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
Now you will always reach the gateway designated by the MAC address
under “http://192.168.99.253/”. This assignment remains valid until the
PC is re-started. Assignments which are current have “arp -a” displayed.
Enter “arp -d *” to delete all assignments.
Tip:
Start the “ping -t 192.168.99.253” command in a second entry
prompt to be continually informed about the accessibility of this
IP address.
