DECT Networks
DECT Areas
It is possible to operate a DECT network with multiple DECT areas on the
Forum 5004/5008/5012 communications system. A DECT area
(“DECT Area”) has the following properties:
●
The DECT base stations of a DECT area are synchronous with one another.
This means that when transferring an ongoing call from one DECT base
station to another is without interruption (“Handover”). It is not possible to
hand over a DECT call to a DECT base station from another DECT area.
●
A DECT terminal must be checked in just once in order to be able to auto-
matically connect with DECT base stations of various DECT areas
(“Roaming”). To do so, a DECT terminal is checked in to one of the
configured DECT areas. If the DECT terminal loses its radio connection to
the DECT base stations of a DECT area, it can automatically connect to a
DECT base station of another DECT area. When this happens, an ongoing
call is disconnected.
●
In principle, up to 256 DECT base stations can be operated in each DECT
area. This maximum number is, however, limited by the number of
available U
pn
interfaces. Using 22 Forum 550 Card 8 digital extensions
modules, up to 176 DECT base stations can be connected via 2
Forum Gateways 560 connected by a PCM-V line.
●
Multiple DECT areas can be configured. Each DECT area uses its own
separate PARK code. This code enables DECT terminals to identify the
DECT base stations of a DECT area.
The following graphic illustrates the structure of a DECT network with
multiple DECT areas.
