Configuring SNMP
The SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) agent allows a network
management station using internet protocol to obtain information from FRX8000
nodes. Access to the agent is through any IP interface, including frame relay or X.25
ports configured for IP, and LAN cards.
The agent handles get, get_next, and (for some fields) set commands from the
SNMP manager to provide configuration information and status. This information is
retrieved by calling it from one the MIBs (management information bases).
MIB prefix codes and tree structures are described in the MIB reference guide,
Cabletron part number 09-41-06-149.
Required and Optional Configuration
To support SNMP in an FRX8000 Switch, the following files must be configured in
the database:

Network Defaults , described in Chapter 4. This file must be configured when a
new network is set up. After that, no further changes are generally necessary.

Node parameters , described in Chapter 5. A record must exist for every
FRX8000, N7400, and N7500 on the network.
●
Line Processor , described in Chapter 6. A record must exist for every LP in
every node. IP and SNMP must each be installed onto one RLP in each node that
will support the SNMP agent. Both protocols do not have to be (but can be) on
the same RLP. Also, it does not matter which RLP(s) contain IP and SNMP,
since although the software for each will reside on one RLP, it will be available
to other interfaces in the node.

SNMP Parameters , described beginning on page 16-3. This file defines SNMP
system defaults, community tables, and trap routing parameters.
