FRX8000 3. 0 User G uide, Rev 02
INM
The FRX8000 INM is an ICP with added network management capabilities, used to
configure and control FRX8000 Switches throughout the network. Each INM has a
local keyboard and VGA monitor, and can also be controlled by a local or remote Aux-
iliary Console (ASCII terminal or terminal emulator).
Cards
RLP
The FRX800 RLP, an i960 RISC-based line processor, provides serial interfaces, con-
necting various synchronous and asynchronous user devices to public or private net-
works. Each RLP supports up to 512 simultaneous logical terminations. (A link into
one physical/logical port on an RLP and out another port counts as two terminations.)
LAN Adapters
An FRX8000 supports LAN (local-area network) interfaces via these adapters:
●
Ethernet (802.3) – 10baseT (RJ45/twisted pair), 10base2 (BNC/coax), or AUI
(DB15/coax)
●
Token Ring (802.5) – RJ45 (twisted pair) or DB9
Depending on the chassis model and number of RLPs, an FRX8000 Switch can
contain one or two LAN cards (in any combination). Each LAN card supports one
LAN interface.
The ICP and INM support one Ethernet interface for FTP and telnet access.
Chassis
There are two chassis used in the FRX8000 product line, differing in size and capacity
(see
Table 1-1
.)
Operator Interfaces
●
Although the FRX8000 Switch and ICP do not require an operator interface for
normal operation, an optional locally attached VGA monitor can be useful
during operation for displaying performance data. (A keyboard is also necessary
any time a monitor is used.)
●
Each INM and NMP has a local keyboard and VGA monitor. The device can
also be controlled via an optional Auxiliary Console (ASCII terminal/keyboard
or PC with terminal emulation software), attached directly or via modem to the
COM2 serial port in the INM/NMP.
●
Any INM or NMP with IP and SNMP configured can be accessed by
Cabletron’s Spectrum® management products.
Event Logging Printer
Each INM, ICP, and NMP can have a local (via COM1) printer, to which alarm mes-
sages are sent from the INM/ICP/NMP and any other nodes that report to it. Several
parameters in Node records (see Chapter 5) determine where alarms are sent.
