13.6.3 Audio

Compression Configuration

The audio compressor reduces the wide dynamic range of spoken speech to a smaller dynamic range in
order to achieve the best intelligibility and general received sound quality.

The audio compression involves several parameters, but to simplify the set-up process, most of these
parameters are pre-optimised with fixed values, for instance:

•

Attack time = 50ms

•

Decay time = 1000ms

The configurable parameters are:

•

Threshold level

This is the level in dB at which at the compression begins.

•

Compression ratio

This is the amount of gain reduction applied to the input signal when it exceeds the threshold level.

In order to adjust the audio compression proceed as follows.

2. Scroll the output list and select the required induction loop output:

Default value:

4 outputs for VAR4

12 outputs for VAR12

Note:

Not all of the VAR Router’s outputs can be configured to support Induction Loops;

Table

details the possible induction loop output allocation.

The output name is shown on the right side of the display. The output name above is the
output 1 default name, however this may have been changed according to each site’s
configuration.

3. Move to, and select the

Ind Loop

menu item.

4. The induction loop type is displayed. Make sure that the correct induction loop type is selected, and

then press the SELECT key to proceed to the next menu level.

5. Move to, and select the

Equalisation

menu item.

6. Move to, and scroll the threshold level until the required band is displayed.

Default value:

‘–20’

Possible values: –20dB to 0dB (1dB steps)

Note:

E.g. setting the threshold to –20dB will cause any input signal above –20dB to be shaped by the

compressor according to the configured compression ration.
