Appendix F. Operating System
The operating system is a real-time system based on the Vx Works kernel. In addition to Vx
Works, the file system DOS Fs and Vx Works run-time libraries are utilized.
The operating system is structured to be run as a preemptive, real-time, multitasking environment,
using message passing as the principal method of interprocess communication. The system
assumes the existence of both a hard disk as well as a floppy disk system. The floppy disk file
system is designed to be compatible with that used by IBM PC-DOS compatible machines. The Vx
Works operating system supports an IDE hard drive and a Magneto Optical drive through the file
system.
