Multipling
Multiplexer
A device (circuit pack) that combines two or more transmission signals into a combined signal
on a shared medium.
Multiplexing
The process of combining multiple signals into a larger signal at the transmitter by a

Network Equipment-Building System
Network Element (NE)
A node in a telecommunication network that supports network transport services and is directly
manageable by a management system.
Network Element (NE)
The basic building block of a telecommunications equipment within a telecommunication
network that meets SONET standards. Typical internal attributes of a network element include:
onr or more high- and low-speed transmission ports, built-in intelligence, synchronization and
timing capability, and access interfaces for use by technicians and/or operation systems. In
addition, a network element may also include a time slot interchanger.
Network Service Access Point (NSAP) Address
Network Service Access Point Address (used in the OSI network layer 3). An automatically
assigned number that uniquely identifies a Network Element for the purposes of routing DCC
