Safety Distance Example Two (Zone Guarding) with Combined Protective
Devices
IMPROPER MACHINE GUARDING PROTECTION
•
DO NOT allow an operator to stand undetected between the safety mat and the machine
when using FF-SM Series safety mats for point-of-operation guarding.
•
Ensure the machine control circuitry is designed in such a way that a malfunction of a
component still allows correct operation of the control circuitry but prevents next cycle
activation.
•
Ensure a manual restart function is required before further machine operation can occur.
•
Ensure the location of the manual restart function provides the operator with a clear view of
the danger zone.
•
Ensure a Programmable Logic Controller cannot override a manual restart function.
•
Ensure each safety mat activation immediately stops machine operation within the response
time of the components.
•
Ensure clearing the sensing zone does not start machine operation.
•
Ensure the application of electrical power does not initiate machine operation after a cycle
interruption. Ensure it is necessary to initiate machine operation using a normal control
sequence.
•
Ensure additional safety devices (those used for other functions of the machine) work
correctly.
Failure to comply with these instructions could result in death or serious injury.
