Proxy ARP (Address Resolution Protocol)
ARP requests
The
➤➤
Proxy ARP
function enables
X3200
to answer
➤➤
ARP
requests
from the local LAN and from the LAN of specific WAN partners. That is, if a host
in the LAN wants to set up a connection to another host in the LAN or to a WAN
partner but does not know its hardware address, it sends a so-called ARP re-
quest into the network as a
➤➤
broadcast
. If Proxy ARP is activated in
X3200
and the desired host can be reached over a WAN interface which is defined as
a host route,
X3200
answers the ARP request with its own hardware address.
This is sufficient for establishing the connection: The
➤➤
data packets
are
sent to
X3200
, which then forwards them to the desired host.
