GENERAL  DESCRIPTION

The  V8  engines  covered   in  this  section  a re   the  307, 

350,  366  and  427  cu.  in.  engines  used  in  10-60  S e rie s  

T ru ck   v eh icles.  In  o rd e r  to  avoid  repetition   and  to  iden­
tify   the  engines  involved  in  a  particu lar  procedu re,  the 
307  and  350  cu.  in.  V8  engines  are  identified  as  “ Small 
V S 's ” .  The  366,  396  and  427  cu.  in.  engines  are  identified 

as  “ M ark  IV  V 8 's " .

T h is  section  c o v e rs   the  rem o val  and  installation  of 

engine  assem blies;  the  rem o va l,  installation  and  adjust­
ment  o f  some  su b-assem blies  and  replacem ent  o f  some 
components. 

F o r  s e r v ic e   to  a ll  components  and  sub- 

a ss e m b lie s   (a fte r  re m o v a l)  and  rem oval  o f  some  sub­

a ssem b lies,  r e fe r   to  Section  6  o f  the  C hassis  Overhaul 
Manual.

Because  o f  the  inter changeability  and  s im ila rity   o f 

many  engines,  engine  su b-assem blies  and  parts  re g a rd ­

le s s   o f  which  truck  veh icle  they  are  used  in,  typical 
illu stration s  and  p roced u res  a re  used  (except  where 

s p e c ific   illu strations  o r  procedures  a re   n ecessary  to 
c la r ify   the  operation). 

Although  illu stration s  showing 

bench  operations  a re   used,  m ost  single  operations,  when 

not  part  of  a  gen eral  overhaul,  should  be  p erfo rm ed   (if 

p ra ctic a l)  with  the  engine  in  the  veh icle.

COMPONENT  REPLACEMENT  AND  ADJUSTMENT

Engine  Assembly

 

Removal

1.  Disconnect  battery  cables  and  drain  cooling  system .
2.  R em ove  the  a ir   clea n er.

3.  P e r fo r m   the  follow ing  p relim in a ry   operations:

ON  A L L   E X C E P T   T E   50  and  60  SERIES:

•  R em ove  the  hood  as  outlined  in  Section  11.

•  R em ove  the  rad iator  and  shroud  as  outlined  in 

Section  13.

ON  T E   50  and  60  SERIES:

•  Rem ove  the  rad iator,  radiator  support  and  shroud 

as  outlined  in  Section  13.

•  Disconnect  shaft  linkage  at  control  island.
•  Disconnect  choke  cable  at  carburetor.
•  Disconnect  em ergen cy  brake  cable  at  em ergency 

brake  and  retaining  brackets.

•  Rem ove  bolts  retaining  control  island  to  support 

and  swing  control  island  forw ard.

•  Disconnect  hoses  at  radiator  surge  tank.
