Removal

body; and using T oolJ-21359, d riv e sea l in place.

body; and using T o o l J - 21464, d riv e seal in place.

The follow in g operations when done as single o p era
tions and not as p a rt of a gen eral overhaul should, as a
p ra c tic a l m atter, be p e rfo rm e d with the tran sm ission in

a. O il f i l l e r pipe and
“ O”
rin g seal.
b. O il pan and gasket.
c. Down sh ift solenoid o r connector.
d. V alve body sp acer plate, gasket and check balls.
e. Front accum ulator piston.
f . R ea r s e rv o and re a r accum ulator assem bly.
g. R ea r band apply checking with T o o l J - 21370.
h. Front s e rv o assem bly.
i . Speedo d riven gear.
j. Case extension o r gasket,
k. F ilte r and “ O” ring.
1. P re s s u re sw itch assem bly.
TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT
B e fo re ra isin g the truck, disconnect the battery and r e
lea se the parking brake.
1. R aise truck on hoist.
2. R em ove p r o p e lle r shaft.
3. D isconnect sp eed om eter cable, e le c tr ic a l lead to
case connector, vacuum line at m odulator, and o il
c o o le r pipes.
4. D isconnect sh ift control linkage.
5. Support
tran sm ission
with suitable transm ission
jack.
6. D isconnect r e a r mount fro m fra m e crossm em b er.
7. R em ove two bolts at each end of fra m e crossm em b er
and rem ove cro ssm em b er.
8. R em ove co n v e rte r under pan.
9. R em ove c o n v e rte r to fly w h eel bolts.
10. Loosen exhaust pipe to m anifold bolts approxim ately
1/4 inch, and lo w e r tran sm ission until jack is b a rely
supporting it.
11. R em ove tran sm ission to engine mounting bolts and
rem o ve o il f i l l e r tube at transm ission.
12. R aise tran sm ission to its norm al position, support
engine with jack and slid e tran sm ission rea rw a rd
fro m engine and lo w e r it away fro m veh icle.
C A U TIO N :
Use_ c o n verter holding T o o l J-5384
when lo w erin g tran sm ission o r keep r e a r of
tran sm ission lo w e r than fron t so as not to lose
co n verter.
The installation of the tran sm ission is the r e v e r s e of
the rem o va l with the follow in g additional steps.
B e fo re in stallin g the fle x plate to co n v e rte r bolts,
make certain that the w eld nuts on the c o n verter a re
flush with the fle x plate and the co n verter rotates fr e e ly
by hand in this position. Then, hand sta rt a ll th ree bolts
and tighten fin g e r tight b e fo re torquing to sp ecification .
T h is w ill insure p ro p er co n verter alignm ent.
NOTE:
A fte r installation of tran sm ission check
linkage fo r p rop er adjustment.

TURBO HYDRA-MATIC 400 DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
C A U TIO N :
In the event of a m a jo r tran sm ission
fa ilu re, re p la c e filt e r assem b ly, and flush o il
c o o le r and c o o le r lin es.
A ccu ra te diagnosis of tran sm ission problem s begins
with a thorough understanding of n orm al tran sm ission
operation. In p a rticu la r, knowing which units a re involved
in the va riou s speeds o r shifts so that the s p e c ific units
o r c ircu its in volved in the p rob lem can be isola ted and
in vestigated fu rther. A n a ly tica l diagnosis w ill p rotect the
technician fr o m com e backs and c e rta in ly w ill im p rove
owner satisfactiion .
An im portant and often overlook ed aspect of diagnosis
is finding out s p e c ific a lly what the custom er is com plain
ing of. F o r this purpose a sh ort rid e with the custom er
w ill often p ro ve b en eficia l. It m ay be found that the con
dition the custom er wants c o rre c te d is standard and
should not be altered.
The fo llo w in g sequence, based on fie ld experien ce, p ro
v id es the d esired inform ation quickly and in m ost cases
actually c o rre c ts the malfunction without req u irin g the
rem o va l of the transm ission. D etails of the item s listed
in this sequence are co v e re d fu rth er in the text.
SEQUENCE FOR TURBO H Y D R A -M A T IC 4 0 0
D IA G N O SIS PROCEDURE
1. Check o il le v e l and condition.
2. Check and c o r r e c t detent switch.
3. Check and c o r r e c t vacuum line and fittin gs.
4. Check and c o r r e c t manual linkage.
OIL LEVEL A N D C O N D IT IO N CHECK
A lw ays check the o il le v e l b e fo re road testing. O il
must be v is ib le on dip stick p r io r to operating the veh icle.
E r r a tic shifting, pump noise, o r other m alfunctions can
in som e cases be tra ced to im p ro p er o il le v e l.
