h. Install output yoke o r companion flange o r m ain­
shaft. Using a flange o r yoke holding tool in stall
retaining nut. T orqu e the retaining nut as follow s:

M u n c ie ........................... 95-120 ft.-lb s .
NP435 ........................... 90-130 ft.-lb s .
NOTE:
On som e m odels with SM420 tra n s m is ­
sion, install flange o r yoke retaining bolt. Torque
b olt to 60-65 ft. lbs.
i . Install speedom eter driven gea r, then connect
speedom eter cable.
5. Reconnect p ro p e lle r shaft to tran sm ission as d e­
scrib ed in " P R O P E L L E R S H A F T S " (Section 4) o f
this manual.
6. R e fill tran sm ission with lubricant recom m ended in
L U B R IC A T IO N (Section 0) o f this manual.
SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR REPLACEMENT
Disconnect speedom eter cable, rem ove lock plate to
housing bolt and lock w ash er and rem ove lock plate. In­
s e rt screw d r iv e r in lock plate slot in fittin g and p ry fit ­
ting, gear and shaft fro m housing. P r y " O " ring from
g ro o v e in fitting.
Install new
“ O”
rin g in gro o ve in fittin g, coat " O "
rin g and driven g e a r shaft with tran sm ission lubricant
and in sert shaft.
Hold the assem bly so slot in fitting is tow ard lock plate
boss on housing and in stall in housing. Push fittin g into
housing until lock plate can be in serted in g ro o v e and
attached to housing.
TRANSM ISSIO N SIDE COVER
REPLACEMENT REPAIR
S ag in aw and Muncie 3-Speed (Fig. 6c)
1. Disconnect control rods fro m le v e r s , back-up lamp
w irin g and TCS switch.
2. Shift tran sm ission into neutral detent positions b e­
fo re rem ovin g c o v e r. R em ove co v e r assem bly from
tran sm ission case c a re fu lly and allow o il to drain.
3. R em ove the outer sh ifter le v e r s .
4. R em ove both shift fork s fro m sh ifter shaft a ssem ­
b lie s . R em ove both sh ifter shaft assem b lies from
c o v e r. " O " ring seals around sh ifter shaft may now
be p ried out i f replacem ent is requ ired because o f
damage.
5. Rem ove detent cam spring and p ivot reta in er
“ C”
ring. R em ove both detent cam s.
6. W ith detent spring tang p ro jectin g up o v e r the 2nd
and 3rd sh ifter shaft c o v e r opening install the fir s t
and re v e r s e detent cam onto the detent cam pivot
pin. W ith the detent spring tang p ro jectin g up o v e r
the fir s t and r e v e r s e sh ifter shaft co v e r hole install
the 2nd and 3rd detent cam.
7. Install detent cam retaining “ C” ring to pivot shaft,
and hook spring into detent cam notches.
8. Install both sh ifter shaft a s s e m b lie s in c o v e r being
carefu l not to damage seals. Install both shift fork s
to sh ifter shaft assem b lies, liftin g up on detent cam
to allow fork s to fu lly seat into position.
9. Install outer sh ifter le v e r s , flat w ashers, lock wash­
e r s and bolts.
10. Shift sh ifter le v e r s into neutral detent (cen ter) p o s i­
tion and slide co v e r into place making sure the shift
fork s a re aligned with th eir re s p e c tiv e mainshaft
clutch sliding sleeves.
11. Install co v e r attaching bolts and tighten evenly to
sp ecified torque. In stall TCS sw itch and connect
w irin g.
12. Rem ove f ille r plug and add lubricant sp ecified in
Section 0, to le v e l o f f ille r plug hole.

taching screw s and reta in er fro m com partm ent flo o r.
2. R em ove flo o r coverin g fro m veh icle.
3. R em ove tran sm ission shift le v e r boot reta in er at­
taching screw s.
