GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Eaton tw o-speed a xles are available in three M odels
17201, 17221 (18,500) and 19201 (23,000).
A ll M odels are equipped with a s p ira l b evel ring gea r
and pinion. The two 18,500 lb. axles are the same except
fo r a la r g e r d riv e g ea r diam eter on the 17221 Model.
The 23,000 lb. axle is s im ila r in construction to the
18,500 lb. shown in F igu re 80 but many components are
o f in creased s ize to obtain the g re a te r capacity rating.
S ervice operations outlined in this section w ill be
applicable to both the 18,500 and 23,000 lb. axles, the
only exception being the shifting system s. The 18,500 lb.
axle uses an e le c tr ic pow er shifting arrangem ent which is
covered in “ R ear A xle (C h evro let) Tw o-Speed E le c tric
Shift System ” . The 23,000 lb. axle in corporates a Piston
A ir Shift which is covered in this section.
MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENTS
