NOTE:
I f pump p ro v e s faulty in test number
two, test should be repeated a fter pump is r e
p a ired and installed in veh icle. T h is w ill provide
a means o f checking the re p a irs made to the
pump and the condition o f the steerin g gear,
which may also be faulty.
COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIRS
POWER STEERING PUMP
Removal
1. D isconnect hoses at pump. When hoses a re discon
nected, secu re ends in ra ised position to prevent
drainage of o il. Cap o r tape the ends o f the hoses to
preven t entrance of dirt.
2. In sta ll two caps at pump fittin gs to preven t drainage
o f o il fro m pump.
3. Loosen bracket-to-pu m p mounting nuts.
4. R em ove pump belt.
5. R em ove bracket-to-pum p bolts and rem ove pump
fro m veh icle.
6. R em ove d riv e pulley attaching nut.
7. R em ove pulley fro m shaft. Do not ham m er pulley
o ff shaft as this w ill damage pump. Use T o o l

fo r
pulling stamped pulleys o r T o o l
J-8433-1 with Adapter J-8433-2 fo r cast pulleys.
Installation
1. In sta ll pump pulley.
C A U TIO N :
Da not ham m er on pump shaft. Use
pulley nut to pull pu lley onto shaft.
2. P o s itio n pump assem bly on veh icle and in stall at
taching parts lo o sely .
3. Connect and tighten hose fittin g.
4. F i l l r e s e r v o ir . B leed pump by turning pulley back
ward (cou n ter-clock w ise as view ed fro m fron t) until
a ir bubbles cease to appear.
5. In stall pump b elt o v e r pulley.
6. Tension b elt as outlined under "Pum p B elt Tension—
Adjustm ent” in this section.

POWER STEERING GEAR (Figs. 25 and 2 6 )
Removal
1. M ark steerin g shaft to stub shaft relationship and
disconnect the steerin g shaft fro m the lo w e r coupling.
2. R em ove hoses fro m g e a r assem bly.
3. R em ove pitman arm bolt, nut, washer and pitman
arm .
4. R em ove mounting b olts and steerin g gear.
Installation
1. In stall pow er steerin g g e a r on veh icle by re v e rs in g
rem o va l procedure.
NOTE:
A ll steerin g gea r to fra m e and steerin g
gea r to fle x ib le coupling fa sten ers are im portant
attaching p arts in that they could a ffect the p e r
form an ce of vita l components and system s, and/
o r could resu lt in m a jo r re p a ir expense. They
must be rep laced with one of the sam e part num
b e r o r with an equivalent p art if replacem ent b e
com es n ecessary. Do not use a replacem ent part
of le s s e r quality o r substitute design. Torque
values must be used as sp ecified during r e
assem bly to assure p ro p er retention of this part.
2. Check steerin g gea r fo r p ro p er lubricant le v e l.

POWER CYLINDER
Removal
1. Disconnect the two hydraulic lin es connected to the
pow er cylin d er and drain fluid into a container. Do
not reuse.

of cylin der.
b. On each end of p ow er cylin der rem ove the cotter
pin locking the adjusting screw in position and
back out adjusting s c re w fa r enough to pull cylin
der o ff b all stud.

cotter pin locking the adjusting s c re w in position

arm .
2. Rem ove pow er cylin d er from veh icle.
Installation
1. In stall the pow er cylin d er on the veh icle by r e v e rs in g
rem ova l procedu res.
NOTE:
When in stallin g pow er cylin d ers in c o r
porating an adjusting s c re w at the b all stud at
tachment, tighten screw , with ball stud in place
until it bottom s, then back off to nearest hole and
secu re with cotter pin.
2. Reconnect the two hydraulic lin es, f i l l the system
with fluid and b leed out a ir using the procedu re out
lined under "M aintenance and Adjustm ents." G rease
b a ll joint.
