2. Slide new seal on each end o f shaft and in sert shaft
into con trol arm .
3. Start new bushings on shaft and into control arm .
Adjust shaft until it is cen tered in con trol arm , then
turn bushings in and torque to sp ecification s. F igu re
21 shows c o r r e c t fin a l positioning o f shaft. Check
shaft fo r fr e e rotation and in sta ll grea se fittings.
Ball Join t
1. Using heavy w all steel tubing o r pipe, make r e
m o ver/ in s ta lle r tools to the dim ensions shown in
F igu re 22.
2. P la ce control arm o v e r re m o v e r support and, with
appropriate re m o v e r, p re s s out b all joint (fig . 23).
3. In vert arm and p lace on in s ta lle r support at ball
joint area.
4. P r e s s new b a ll joint assem bly into arm . If p ress
ram d ia m eter is la rg e enough to c o v e r O.D. o f b all
joint assem bly, p ress joint into arm with ram in d i
re c t contact. If ram is s m a lle r, use m etal tube o r

block (fig . 24). Make sure ball joint assem bly is
fully seated and square with arm .
Installation
NOTE:
A ll spring attachments, including center
bolts, are im portant attaching parts in that they
could affect the p erform an ce o f vita l components
and system s, and/or could result in m a jo r r e
p a ir expense. They must be replaced with parts
o f the same p art numbers o r with equivalent
parts i f replacem en t becom es n ecessary. Do not
use replacem ent parts of le s s e r quality o r sub
stitute design. Torque values must be used as
sp ecified during reassem b ly to assure p ro p er
retention o f these parts.
1. Install lo w e r b a ll stud through steerin g knuckle and
tighten nut.
2. Install sprin g and con trol arm as outlined under
spring installation.
3. Torque lo w e r con trol arm ball stud to sp ecification s
and in stall co tter pin.
4. L o w er veh icle on hoist.
Upper Control Arm Assem bly
Removal
1. R aise veh icle on hoist, rem ove wheel and tire a s
sem bly and support lo w e r control arm assem bly with
adjustable jackstand.
2. Rem ove co tter pin fro m upper con trol arm ball stud
and loosen stud nut until bottom su rface o f nut is
s ligh tly below end o f stud.
3. Loosen upper con trol arm b all stud in steerin g
knuckle, using T o o l J-8806 position as shown in
F igu re 19. R em ove the nut fro m the b all stud and
ra ise upper arm to c le a r steerin g knuckle.
NOTE:
At this point o r after Step 1, c o m p re s
s o r J-6874 may be in stalled to sa fe ly retain
spring.
4. R em ove nuts secu rin g c o n t r o l arm shaft studs
to cro ssm em b er b racket.
W ithdraw con trol arm
assem bly.
NOTE:
Tape shim s and sph erical spacers to
gether and tag fo r p ro p er relocation when con-
