HEATER AND AIR CONDITIONING 1A-16
The pump mount is such that the d ea ler may use his
own vacuum pump. The gauges and m anifold a re in com
mon use.
Thus a current a ir conditioning d ea ler can use
the equipment on hand and avoid duplication.
GAUGE SET
The gauge set (fig . 25) is an in tegral part of the J-8393
C harging Station.
It is used when purging, evacuating,
charging o r diagnosing trouble in the system . The gauge
at the le ft is known as the low p ressu re gauge. The face
is graduated into pounds of p ressu re and, in the opposite
d ire c tio n , in inches of vacuum.
This is the gauge that
should always be used in checking p ressu res on the low
p re s s u re side of the system . When all p arts of the s y s
tem are functioning p ro p e rly the r e frig e ra n t p ressu re on
the low p ressu re side n ever fa lls below 0 pounds p r e s
su re. H ow ever, s e v e ra l abnorm al conditions can occur
that w ill cause the low p ressu re to fa ll into a p a rtia l va c
uum. T h e re fo re , a low p ressu re gauge is required.
The high p ressu re gauge is used fo r checking p r e s
su res on the high p ressu re side of the system .
The hand shutoff v a lves on the gauge m anifold do not
c on trol the opening o r closin g o ff of p ressu re to the
gauges.
They m e re ly clo se each opening to the center
connector and to each other.
During m ost diagnosing
and s e r v ic e operation, the va lves must be closed. Both
v a lv e s w ill be open at the sam e tim e during purging,
evacuating and charging operations.
The charging station p ro vid es two fle x ib le lines fo r
connecting the gauge set to the system components.
V A C U U M PUMP
A vacuum pump should be used fo r evacuating a ir and
m oistu re fro m the a ir conditioning system .
The vacuum pump (fig. 26) is a component part of
C hargin g Station J-8393, d escrib ed p reviou sly. The fo l
low in g precautions should be ob served re la tiv e to the
o p eration and maintenance of this pump.
• Make sure dust cap on disch arge outlet of vacuum
pump is rem oved b e fo re operating.
• Keep a ll openings capped when not in use to avoid
m oistu re being drawn into the system .
