TRANSMISSIO N REPLACEMENT
R em o val—Except “ K” Series M odels
1. R aise veh icle on suitable hoist and drain lubricant
fro m transm ission.
2. Disconnect speedom eter cable, back-up lamp and
TCS switch at transm ission.
3. R em ove shift con trols fro m transm ission.
NOTE:
On veh icle equipped with 4-speed new
p ro c e s s tran sm ission , p e rfo rm the follow ing:
R em ove the flo o r mat, transm ission flo o r pan
c o ver, place the tran sm ission g ea rsh ift le v e r
in neutral, then rem o ve the transm ission co v e r
and gea rsh ift le v e r (except on veh icle equipped
with Muncie 4-Speed tran sm ission ). On veh icle
equipped with Muncie 4 - Speed transm ission, r e ­
m ove the g ea rsh ift le v e r using T o o l J-8109 as
shown in F igu re 2C. P r e s s down fir m ly and
rotate cou n ter-clock w ise to re le a s e g ea rsh ift
le v e r .
4. P la c e clean lin t- fr e e cloth o r other suitable coverin g
o v e r opening on tran sm ission to preven t entry o f
d i r t o r fo reig n m a teria l ( a p p l i e s to 4 - speed
tran sm ission s).
5. Disconnect parking brake le v e r and controls (when
used) and back up lamp switch w ire.
6. If veh icle is equipped with pow er ta k e-o ff, rem ove
unit and con trols fro m transm ission. P la c e p ro te c ­
tiv e co verin g o v e r opening.
7. Disconnect p ro p e lle r shaft fro m tran sm ission as
d escrib ed in “ P R O P E L L E R SH A FTS7' (SEC. 4) of
this manual.
8. P o sitio n a suitable d olly o r jack under the veh icle
and adjust to c a rry the weight o f the transm ission.
9. V isu ally inspect to determ in e i f other equipment,
lin es o r brackets must be rem oved to p erm it r e ­
m oval o f the transm ission.
10. R em ove flyw heel housing underpan and tran sm ission -
to -flyw h eel housing mounting bolts.
IMPORTANT:
Be sure to support the clutch
re le a s e bearin g and support assem bly during r e ­
m oval o f the tran sm ission main d riv e g e a r fro m
the flyw h eel housing. T h is w ill preven t the r e ­
lea se bearin g from fa llin g out o f the flyw heel
housing when the tran sm ission is rem oved.
11. M ove the tran sm ission assem bly straight away from
the engine, using ca re to keep the tran sm ission main
d riv e gea r shaft in alignm ent with the clutch disc hub.
IMPORTANT:
When rem ovin g the transm ission,
do not allow the weight o f the tran sm ission to
hang on the clutch disc hub, as the disc w ill b e­
com e distorted, seriou sly a ffectin g c l u t c h
operation.
12. When the tran sm ission is fr e e fro m the engine,
lo w e r the tran sm ission and m ove fro m under the
veh icle.
13. If d esired , a carefu l check o f clutch components
should be made a fte r the tran sm ission has been
rem oved.
If the clutch req u ires re p a ir, r e fe r to
" C L U T C H E S " (Section 7) b e fo re tran sm ission is
rein sta lled in the veh icle.
Installation—Except “ K” Series M odels
1. Apply a light coating o f High T em p eratu re G rease to
the main d riv e g e a r bearing reta in er and splined
portion o f tran sm ission main d riv e gea r shaft to
assure fre e m ovem ent o f clutch and tran sm ission
components during assem bly.
CAUTION:
Do not apply an e x c e s s iv e amount
o f g rea se in the above areas, as under norm al
operation this g rea se would be thrown onto
clutch facings resu lting in clutch fa ilu re.
