GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A ll cab m odel trucks (except T ilt Cabs) have a 21 g a l
lon (17.5 gallons Im p e ria l M easure) capacity (approx.)
fuel tank mounted behind the seat within the cab. The
tank is constructed of two s te e l sections, seam welded,
together. The f i l l e r neck extends through the le ft side of
the cab, at a convenient height fro m the ground. Excep
tional stiffn ess is secured by the combination of the
w elded flan ges and depressed ribs in both the fron t and
re a r halves. The tank is bolted to the r e a r of the cab
and to the flo o r panel.
Fram e mounted tanks are located on the right side of
the chassis and lay lengthwise outside the fram e side r a il
on F o rw ard Control, 1-1/2, and 2 ton m odels.
On 1 ton m odels, the above inform ation also applies
except that the tank is mounted on the outside of the le ft
fra m e side r a il. A strong mounting of two m etal straps
anchor these tanks to mounting brackets which are bolted
to the fra m e side m em ber.
On 1/2 and 3/4 ton conventional and 4-w heel d riv e
m odels the tank is located to the re a r of the axle and be
tween the side ra ils and envelopes the forw a rd edge of the
spare tir e . These tanks are supported by one or two stee l
straps which are held at eith er end by a hook into the side
ra il. M etal to m etal contact between tank and brackets
o r straps is prevented by the use of anti-squeak m ateria l.
Upper and lo w e r f i l l e r necks v a ry as to s ize , length and
shape, depending on m odel requirem ents. These necks
are treated so that rust w ill not fo rm and get into the
fu el system . L o w er f i l l e r necks are fir s t bolted o r r iv
eted to the tank, except on cab m odels, and then sweat
sold ered in place to elim inate any p os s ib ility of leakage
at this point.
A ll tanks are equipped with a vented f i l l e r neck cap.
A ll 40 through 60 S eries trucks incorporate a pressu re
r e lie f valve.
The fuel pickup pipe is built in teg ra lly with the tank
gauge unit, located at the top of the tank. A la rge area,
fin e-m esh screen is located on the bottom of the fuel
pickup pipe. This screen is designed to prevent the en
trance of d irt or w ater into the fuel system , and operates
with a se lf-c le a n in g action.
Fram e mounted tanks consist of an upper and lo w e r
half, each with a wide flange and b affles which are
p ressed into the tank halves. The two tank sections are
seam welded at the flange around the entire tank to as
sure leakproof construction.
Exceptional stiffn ess is
secured by the combination of the welded flanges and de
p ressed rib s in both upper and lo w er tank sections. B af
fle plates are in corporated to p rovide additional stiffn ess
and to prevent the surging of gasoline within the tank.
SERVICE OPERATIONS
D R A IN IN G FUEL TANK
If the fu el tank does not incorporate a drain plug, it
w ill be n ecessary to siphon fu el fro m the tank when
draining
is
needed.
T h e
follo w in g procedure
is
recommended.
1. Obtain approxim ately 10 fe et of 3/8" I.D. hose and
cut a flap-type s lit 18" from one end. Make this
cut in the d irection of the sh orter end of hose (See
Figu re 1).
2. In sert a sm all pipe nipple (slig h tly la r g e r O.D. than
the hose I.D .) into the opposite end of hose.
