Ball Joint Adjustm ent
F ron t axle b all joint adjustment is g en era lly n ecessary
only when there is e x c e s s iv e play in steerin g, irre g u la r
w ea r on tir e s o r p ersisten t loosening o f the tie rod.
1. R aise veh icle on hoist then place jack stands just
in side o f front springs.
2. Disconnect connecting rod and tie rod to allow in ­
dependent m ovem ent o f each s teerin g knuckle.
3. A t top o f knuckle, apply torque wrench to one o f the
s te e rin g arm s a t t a c h i n g stud nuts, then check
torque n ecessary to turn the steerin g knuckle. (See
F igu re 44).
Maxim um torque should be:
15 ft. lb s ...........................................................A x le 44-5B
NOTE: Knuckle should turn sm oothly through
turning arc but have no v e r tic a l end play.
IMPORTANT: Tem peratu re w ill a ffe c t turning
torque considerably.
5. If torque is too low on axle 44-5B, p e rfo rm the
follow in g:
a. Rem ove upper b all stud locknut and c o tter pin.
b. Torque b a ll stud adjusting s le e v e to 50 ft. lb.
c. R ein stall locknut and new c o tter pin.
d. Recheck startin g torque n ecessary to turn the
knuckle. If there is s till ex c e s s iv e play, retorque
b a ll stud adjusting sle e v e to 60 ft. lbs. b efo re
taking fu rth er steps to c o r r e c t condition.
NOTE: If Specifications on torque o f steerin g
knuckle on turning a re not adequate replace
requ ired p arts o r make n ecessary adjustments.

COMPONENT PARTS REPLACEMENT
FREE-WHEELING HUB
The fr e e wheeling hub a ssem b lies used on the front
w heels are serv ic e a b le .
K 10 Series
Removal (Figure 45 )
1. Turn actuator le v e r to set hub to “ L O C K ” position
(fig . 46) and ra ise v e h icle on hoist.
2. Rem ove s ix retaining plate bolts and rem o ve reta in ­
ing plate actuating knob and “ O ” ring.
3. R em ove internal snap ring, outer clutch retaining
ring and actuating cam body.
4. R e lie v e p ressu re on the axle shaft snap ring and r e ­
m ove snap ring.
5. R em ove the axle shaft sle e v e and clutch ring a s ­
sem bly and inner clutch ring and bushing assem bly.
6. Rem ove p re s s u re spring and spring reta in er plate.
Disassembly
1. R em ove actuator knob and “ O ” ring fro m retaining
plate, d isca rd “ O ” ring and rep lace with a new
“ O ” ring during assem bly.
2. Slide inner clutch rin g and bushing assem bly fro m
axle s leeve and clutch ring assem bly.
