Repairs
Bushings
1. R em ove grea se fittin gs fro m ends o f bushings and
unscrew bushings fro m shaft and con trol arm . R e
m ove shaft and sea ls.
2. Slide new seal on each end of shaft and in sert shaft
into control arm .
3. Start new bushings on shaft and into control arm .
Adjust shaft until it is cen tered in con trol arm , then
turn bushings in and torque 160 lb. ft. fo r CP10,
190 lb. ft. fo r CP20-30 i f spacer is used, 95 lb. ft.
fo r CP10, 135 lb. ft. fo r CP20-30 if no spacer is
used. Check shaft fo r fr e e rotation. F igu re 25 shows
c o r r e c t final positioning o f shaft.
Ball Joint
1. C enter punch r iv e t heads and d r ill out riv e ts . R ivets
may also be ch iseled o r ground off.
2. R em ove b all joint assem bly and inspect arm fo r
cracks o r d istortion at the ball joint seat.
3. Install s e r v ic e b a ll join t assem bly in arm using
sp ecial hardened bolts only, torquing bolts 45 lb. ft.
Installation
NOTE:
A ll spring attachments, including center
bolts, are im portant attaching p arts in that they
could a ffect the p erfo rm a n ce o f vita l components
and system s, and/or could resu lt in m a jo r r e
p a ir expense. They must be replaced with parts
o f the sam e p art numbers o r with equivalent
parts if replacem en t b ecom es n ecessary. Do not
use replacem ent p arts o f le s s e r quality o r sub
stitute design. Torqu e values must be used as
sp ecified during rea ssem b ly to assure p rop er
retention of these parts.
1. P la c e control arm in position on bracket and install
nuts. B efore tightening nuts, in sert c a ster and cam
b e r shims in the sam e o rd e r as when rem oved.
Tighten nuts 80 lb. ft. fo r CP10 m odels, 155 lb. ft.
fo r CP20-30 m odels.
2. In sert b all joint stud into steerin g knuckle and install
nut. Tighten stud nut 70 lb. ft. on CP10 m odels,
120 lb. ft. on CP20-30 m odels.
3. Rem ove spring co m p re s s o r J-6874 i f used, and r e
m ove adjustable support fro m under con trol arm .
In stall wheel and tire assem bly.
4. L o w e r veh icle and check front end alignm ent and
adjust w here n ecessa ry.
5. L o w e r veh icle on hoist.
Steering K nuckle/Steering Arm
NOTE:
It
is
recom m ended that veh icle be
ra ised and supported on a tw in -post hoist so that
the front c o il spring rem ain s com pressed, yet
the wheel and steerin g knuckle assem bly rem ain
accessib le. If a fra m e hoist is used, support
lo w er con trol arm with an adjustable jackstand
to
sa fely
retain
spring in its curb height
position
Removal
1. R aise veh icle on hoist and support lo w e r control arm
as noted above.
2. Rem ove hub cap, wheel hub dust c o v e r, co tter pin ad
justing nut and washer, withdraw wheel and tire ,
brake drum, and wheel hub and b earin g assem bly
fro m steerin g knuckle spindle.
3. Disengage brake shoe return springs and rem ove
brake shoe hold-down clip s. Rem ove brake shoes
fro m backing plate.
CAUTIO N:
Keep brake shoes clean and dry.
4. R em ove brake anchor pin and two bolts securing
brake backing plate and steerin g arm to steerin g
knuckle.
5. W ithdraw steerin g arm and brake backing plate fro m
steerin g knuckle. W ire backing plate to fra m e. Do
not disconnect brake line.
NOTE:
R e fe r to Section 9-S teerin g, fo r further
steerin g arm s e r v ic e operations.
6. R em ove upper and lo w e r b all stud c o tter pins and
rem ove b a ll stud nuts. F r e e s teerin g knuckle from
b a ll studs by rapping steerin g knuckle b osses. W ith
draw steerin g knuckle.
Installation
1. P la ce steerin g knuckle in position and in sert upper
and lo w er b all studs into knuckle b osses.
2. In stall ball stud nuts and tighten as fo llo w s: Upper
nuts 70 lb. ft. CP10, 120 lb. ft. C P20-30; lo w er nuts
120 lb. ft. CP10, 215 lb. ft. CP20-30.
NOTE:
These b a ll stud nuts to knuckle fa s
teners are im portant attaching parts in that they

p a ir expense. They must each be replaced with
