CAPACITY (SALISBURY-TYPE) AXLES
The 2400, 2900, 3300, 3500 and 3600 lb. capacity
(S a lisb u ry-T yp e) axle (fig . 25) is a sem ifloatin g, fa b ri
cated constructed type consisting o f a cast c a r r ie r with
la rg e b osses on each end into which two welded steel
tubes are fitted. The c a r r ie r contains an overhung hypoid
pinion and ring gea r. The d iffe re n tia l is a two pinion
arrangem ent.
The axle housing is made up o f two steel w elded tubes
p re s s e d into the cro s s b o re o f the cast c a r r ie r - - e a c h tube
is puddle welded to the c a r r ie r . W elded-on brackets
p ro vid e attachment points fo r suspension components
such as spring seats, shock ab sorb ers and control arm s.
A w elded flange is p rovid ed fo r brake flange plate
attachment.
An overhung hypoid d riv e pinion is supported by two
preloaded tapered r o lle r b earin gs. The pinion shaft is
sealed by means o f a m olded, spring loaded, rubber seal.
T h e seal is mounted on the pinion flange which is splined
and bolted to the hypoid pinion shaft.
The hypoid ring gear is bolted to a on e-p iece d iffe re n
tia l case which is supported by a two preloaded tapered
r o lle r bearings.

The 5200 and 7200 lb. capacity truck re a r a xles (fig. 26)
are o f the full floating type with hypoid ring g e a r and
d riv e pinion. The full floating construction enables easy
rem o va l o f axle shafts without rem ovin g truck load and
without jacking up the axle. The d iffe re n tia l c a r r ie r is
h eavily ribbed to p rovid e r ig id support fo r the d ifferen tia l
a s s e m b ly --d iffe re n tia l caps a re doweled to the c a r r ie r to
assu re p e rfe c t alignm ent.
The straddle-m ounted d rive pinion is supported at the
fron t by two opposed tapered r o lle r bearin gs. The pinion
r e a r bearing is a r o lle r bearing assem bly consisting o f
an outer race and r o lle r a s s e m b ly --a p re c is io n ground
diam eter on the pinion p ilo t functions as an inner race.
A thrust pad mounted on the end o f an adjustable screw
threaded into the c a r r ie r housing lim its d eflection o f the
rin g g e a r under high torque conditions.
