STEERING 9-6
F ig . 1 0 — R e m o v a l o f A l i g n m e n t Pin Sp a ce rs
(P o w e r G e a r S h o w n )
NOTE:
A new coupling in corp orates p lastic
spacers on the alignm ent pins which aid in cen
te rin g the pins in the flange openings and also
s e rv e to maintain the c o r r e c t coupling to flange
dim ension (fig . 10).
Be sure the spacers are
fu lly in stalled on the pins.
40-60 S eries Tru cks - If disassem bled, align the
fle x ib le w a fer and ground w ire tab with the split
clamp and in sta ll the coupling to steerin g shaft
flange b olts, rein fo rcem en ts, lockw ashers and nuts;
torque nuts to 18 ft. lbs.
In stall the locking pins,
rein forcem en ts, lockw ash ers and nuts; torque nuts
to 18 ft. lbs.
NOTE:
Be sure the locking pins are centered in
the flan ge openings.
2. A lign the coupling with the steerin g gea r w orm shaft
and in stall the coupling.
NOTE:
On 10-30 s e r ie s trucks, push the cou
pling onto the w orm shaft until the coupling re in
fo rcem en t bottoms against the end of the worm .
3. In stall the sp ecial bolt into the sp lit clamp and
torque to 30 ft. lbs.
NOTE:
The bolt must pass through the shaft
undercut.
NOTE:
The steerin g shaft coupling fa sten er is
an im portant attaching part in that it could af
fe c t the p erform a n ce o f vita l components and
system s, and/or could resu lt in m ajor re p a ir
expense.
It must be rep laced with one of the
sam e part number o r with an equivalent part if
replacem en t becom es n ecessary.
Do not use a
replacem ent p art of le s s e r quality o r substitute
design.
Torque values must be used as sp ecified
during rea ssem b ly to assure p ro p er retention of
this part.
4. R ein stall the g e a r o r column as outlined la te r in this
section.
Be sure to maintain a coupling to flange
dim ension o f .250" to .375". On 10-30 s e r ie s trucks,

fashion a hook out of heavy gauge w ire and pull the
plastic spacers away fro m the locking pins (fig. 10).
C A U TIO N :
Under no circum stances should the
veh icle be d riven until the p lastic spacers have
been rem oved fro m the locking pins.
Universal Joint Type (Fig. 11)
NOTE:
Some m odels use an interm ediate shaft
with a splined slip joint.
On these m odels,
lo w erin g the steerin g gea r o r steerin g column
is not n ecessary.
Separate the upper coupling
as d escrib ed below , rem ove in term ediate shaft
and coupling and disassem ble lo w e r coupling on
bench.
Removal
1. A fte r m arking steerin g shaft to w orm shaft rela tion
ship, rem ove bolt, nut and washer fro m clamp on
steerin g gea r worm shaft.
2. On tilt cab m odels, rem o ve p la te -to -flo o r panel
screw s.
3. F ro m the upper yoke of the u n iversa l joint, rem ove
the two snap rin gs, then rem o ve the two yoke bush
ings and cork o r rubber w ashers, by tapping yoke
shaft with p la stic m allet.
4. M ove the cen ter cro ss as n ecessa ry, to separate the
upper and lo w e r portions of the coupling.
5. R em ove the coupling fro m the veh icle.
6. D isassem ble lo w e r portion o f coupling on bench, by
repeating Steps 3 and 4.
Installation
1. P o sitio n center c ro ss in lo w e r yoke of coupling.
2. P o s itio n bushing and new cork washer on center
cross. In stall retaining snap ring.
