at parting line do not cut bead on back o f seal.

4. T o rem ove the upper half o f the seal, use a sm all

ham m er to tap a b ra ss pin punch on one end o f seal
until it protrudes fa r enough to be rem oved with

p lie r s (fig. 7V).

NOTE:

A lw ays wipe crankshaft surface clean

b e fo re in stalling a new seal.

5. Lu bricate the lip o f a new seal with engine o il. Keep

o il o ff the parting line su rface. G radually push with
a ham m er handle, w hile turning crankshaft, until

seal is ro lle d into p la ce.

(S im ilar to installin g a

main b earin g). Be carefu l that seal tangs at parting

line do not cut bead on back o f seal.

6. Apply s ea ler to cylin d er block in seal area (fig.

8V).

7. Install the re a r main b earin g cap (with new seal)

and torque to sp ecification s.

3. R em ove a ccesso ry d rive pulley then, i f so equipped,

rem ove dam per retaining bolt.

4. Install T o o l J-6978 on dam per then, turning pu ller

screw , rem ove dam per (fig . 9V).

NOTE:

T o o l J-6978 has holes form in g two pat

tern s. A two bolt and a three bolt pattern. The
holes fo r the two bolt pattern must be elongated

fo r use on the M ark IV V8 engines.

Installation

CAUTIO N:

The in ertia weight section o f the

torsion al  dam per  is  assem bled  to  the  hub  with
a  rubber  type  m ateria l.  The  installation  p ro
cedures  (with  p roper  tool)  must  be  follow ed   or
m ovem ent  o f  the  in ertia  weight  section  on  the

hub w ill d estroy the tuning o f the torsion al
dam per.

1. Coat front c o ver seal contact area (on dam per) with

engine oil.

2. Install dam per on crankshaft as follow s:

a. P la ce dam per in position o v e r key on crankshaft.

b. Pull torsion al damper onto crankshaft (fig. 10V)

as follow s:

c. On M ark IV engines use T o o l J-21058.

NOTE:

If rad iator has not been rem oved from

the  veh icle  a  l/ 2 "-2 0   x  5"  bolt  and  a  l/ 2 "-2 0
nut  may  be  used  in  place  o f  the  bolt  and  nut
from   T o o l  J -2 1058.

CA U TIO N :

Install bolt in crankshaft with suf

ficien t thread engagement (min. 1/2").

d. On Sm all V8 engines in stall dam per using a

7/16"-20 x 5" bolt and nut in place o f bolt and
nut furnished with J - 2 1058.

e. R em ove tool from crankshaft then install damper

retaining bolt and torque to specification s.

3. Install a c c e s s o ry d rive pulley.

4. Install radiator and shroud as outlined in Section 13.

5. Install fan and pulley to w ater pump hub and tighten

secu rely.

6. Install fan b elt and adjust to specification s using

strand tension gauge.

7. F ill cooling system , start engine and check fo r leaks.
