GENERAL DESCRIPTION
INSTALLING TIRES O N MULTI PIECE RIMS
CA U TIO N :
A lw ays inflate tir e s in a safety cage w henever p ossib le o r
use a 'c lip -o n ’ a ir chuck and stand a s id e .
The 1970 truck is equipped with a wide range o f tube
o r tubeless type t ir e s and w heels selected according to
the truck GVW rating and type of s e r v ic e . A ll L ig h t-
Duty 10-30 S e rie s truck m odels w ill be equipped with
nylon cord tir e s except the 10 S eries with p assen ger car
type t ir e s . S eries 40 thru 80 trucks a re equipped alm ost
ex c lu s iv e ly with nylon cord t ir e s . W h eels a re o f the
short spoke, p ie rc e d d isc, o r cast spoke type depending
on model application. The dual re a r wheel option is
availab le beginning with the C20 S e rie s trucks.
TIRE TREAD W EAR IN D IC A TO R
The orig in a l equipment passen ger type tir e s on 10-20
Light-D uty trucks in corp orate built in tread indicators
to assist in judging when tir e s a re worn out and should
be replaced.
T h ese indicators are m olded into the bottom of the
trea d gro o v e s and w ill appear as bands across the tread
as a visu al rem in d er that the tir e should be replaced
(see fig . 1).
When the depth of tread b ecom es l/ l6 -in c h o r le s s as
indicated by the bands, th ere is a significant d e c re a s e in
traction and anti-skid p ro p e rtie s , also, the m a jority of
t ir e troubles w ill occur in the last 10% o f tir e life .
TIRE IN FLA TIO N
T ir e p re s s u re s should be checked at least once a week
and inflated according to the fo llo w in g table. If payload
distribution o r special equipment is such as to im pose
heavy loads on the fron t axle, inflation of fron t tir e s

• A void underinflation to prevent rim b ru ises, ex c e s s iv e
heat, and ir r e g u la r o r rapid w ear.
• A vo id o verin flation to preven t tir e ruptures, hard r id
ing, ir r e g u la r o r rapid w ear and reduction of skid
resistan ce.
• V a lve caps should always be in stalled and tightened
fir m ly to p reven t dust and w ater entering and damage
to v a lv e seats. The caps also act as an a ir seal.
Puncture Inspection and Repair
A t each lu brication, tir e s should be checked fo r f o r
eign objects in the trea d o r breaks in the trea d o r s id e
w all. If tir e is punctured o r oth erw ise damaged, it
should be rep a ired using one of s e v e ra l re p a ir kits a v a il
able through t ir e m anufacturers' outlets.
