condition, with connections tight at term in als, connectors,
and that the axle shift unit is fille d with lubricant to
p ro p er le v e l.
The shift unit should be fille d with lubricant to the
fi l l e r opening on the fron t c o v e r using SAE 10 engine o il.
A t ambient tem p eratu res below 0° use SAE 5W.
Shift Unit Service
Removal
1. Disconnect one o f the battery cables.
2. Rem ove two shift housing to c a r r ie r stud nuts and
lock washer (fig . 63).
3. R em ove shift unit a ssem b ly fro m c a r r ie r (fig . 66).
Check condition o f rubber seal assem bly between
shift unit and c a r r ie r . T h is seal must be in good
condition and be held tightly to the shift yoke by the
spring clamp to p reven t axle lubrication fro m leaking
into shift unit.
4. D isconnect w ire at plug.
Disassembly
K ey numbers in text r e fe r to Figu re 61.
1. R em ove six s c rew s (22) and lock w ashers which at­
tach co v e r (20) to shift m otor housing (5). Drain
lubricant fro m housing. R em ove gasket (19).
2. A fte r rem ovin g c o v e r, the d riv e screw nut (25) w ill
be at eith er top o r bottom depending upon the p o s i­
tion in which the control switch was left.
3. By turning d riv e screw , run nut fro m top o r bottom
to the center o f the s crew (fig . 67).
NOTE: P e rfo rm in g Step 3 is essen tial to p r e ­
vent damage to d riv e nut contact bumper (24).
4. R em ove shift fo rk actuating le v e r (16), torsion spring
(17), and spring winding le v e r (18) as an assem bly by
pulling shaft (15) up. Swing the assem bly away from
the d riv e nut and lift out o f the housing (fig . 68).
5. R em ove th ree s c re w s and lock w ashers (14) which
attach b e a r i n g c o v e r (13). R e m o v e c o v e r and
gasket (12).
6. Push down on d riv e screw assem bly (23) until b e a r ­
ing assem bly (10) is fr e e o f housing.

7. Insert screw d r iv e r in d riv e slot o f screw (fig . 69),
then rem o ve bearing locknut (11) and b earin g with
snap ring (10). D riv e screw assem bly can then be
lifte d out o f housing.
8. R em ove the two locknuts (fig . 70) fro m term in als on
switch (27) and pull o ff m otor w ire s .
9. R em ove three screw s and lock w ashers (1) which at­
tach m otor c o v e r to housing (5). P u ll out m otor with
c o ver attached and rem ove co v e r gasket (4).
10. R em ove two jam nuts (9), and insulator (7) from
outside o f housing. On inside, rem o ve switch center
s crew (26). Pu ll out automatic switch as shown in
Figu re 71.
11. Do not disassem ble the shift fo rk actuating le v e r
(16), torsion spring (17), and spring winding le v e r
