Dana A x le Shaft Rem oval
1. Rem ove wheel and tir e a ssem b lies.
2. R em ove a x les shafts as follow s:
a. 10 S e r ie s --T h e axle shaft on the 10 S e rie s a re the
s e m i-flo a tin g type. Outer end o f shaft is sup­
p orted by a tapered r o lle r bearing.
1. R em ove brake drum.
2. R em ove four bolts holding wheel bearing
flange plate to axle shaft flange.
3. Install P u lle r J-21579 with Slide H am m er
J-2619 and rem o ve axle shafts.
O il Seal a n d /o r Bearing
Replacem ent
1. Rem ove the o il seal by using the button end o f the
axle s h a ft--in s e rt the button end o f the shaft behind
the s te e l case o f the o il seal, then p ry seal out o f
b ore being c a refu l not to damage housing. R e fe r to
F igu re 30 fo r detail o f seal and b earin g installation.
2. In sert T o o l J-8119 into b o re and position it behind
bearin g so that tangs on tool engage bearin g outer
F ig .

3. Lu bricate new bearin g with wheel bearin g lubricant,
and install bearin g so that it bottom s against shoul­
der in housing b ore (fig. 32). T o in stall bearing, use
T o o l J-21491 fo r the 2400 and 2900 lb. axles; T o o l
J-21051 fo r the 3300 lb., 3500 lb., and 3600 lb. axles.
4. Pack cavity between the seal lip s with a high-m elting
point wheel bearin g lubricant, position seal in axle
housing b ore and tap seal into position so that it bot­
tom s against b earin g (fig. 32). T o install seal, use
T o o l J-21491 fo r the 2400 and 2900 lb. axles; T o o l
J-21051 fo r the 3300 lb., 3500 lb., and 3600 lb. axles.
Brake Flange Backing Plate
Replacement
1. R em ove brake line at wheel cylin d er inlet and d isa s­
sem ble brake components fro m flange plate. R e fe r
to Section 5 fo r brake disassem bly procedu re.
2. R em ove four nuts securing flange plate to axle hous­
ing (fig . 30).
3. Install new flange plate to axle housing and torque
nuts to sp ecification s.
NOTE: T h is brake backing plate to r e a r axle
fasten er is an im portant attaching part in that
it could a ffe c t the perform an ce o f v ita l com po­
nents and system s, and/or could resu lt in m ajor
re p a ir expense. It must be rep laced with one o f
the sam e part number o r with an equivalent part
i f replacem en t becom es n ecessa ry. Do not use a
