GENERAL  DESCRIPTION

The  In -L in e   engines  co v e re d   in  this  section  are  the  250 

and  292  cu.  in.  L6  engines  used  in  10-60  S e rie s   truck 

v e h icles.

This  section  c o v e rs   the  rem o va l  and  installation  of  en­

gine  a ssem b lies,  the  rem ova l,  installation  and  adjustment 
of  som e  su b -assem b lies  and  replacem ent  of  som e  com ­

ponents.

a ll  components  and  sub- 

assem b lies 

(a fte r  rem o va l)  and  r e m o v a l   of  som e 

su b -assem b lies,  r e fe r   to  Section  6  o f the  Chassis  O v e r­

haul  Manual.

Because  o f  the  in terchangeability  and  s im ila rity   o f 

many  engine  su b -assem b lies  and  p arts,  re g a rd le s s   o f 

which  truck  ve h ic le   they  are  used  in,  typ ica l  illu stration s 

and  procedu res  are  used  (except  w here  s p e c ific   illu s ­

trations  o r  procedu res  a re  n ecessa ry  to  c la r ify   the 

operation).  Although  illu stra tion s  showing  bench  opera­

tions  a re  used,  m ost  sin gle  operations,  when  not  part  of  a 

gen era l  overhaul,  should  be  p erfo rm ed   (if  p ra c tic a l)  with 

the  engine  in  the  veh icle.

COMPONENT  REPLACEMENT  AND  ADJUSTMENT

Engine  Assembly

 

Removal

1.  D isconnect  b attery  cables  and  drain  cooling  system .
2.  R em ove  the  a ir  cleaner.
3.  P e r fo r m   the  fo llo w in g p re lim in a ry   operations.

ON  CS  10-20-30,  KS  10-20  SERIES:

•  R em ove  the  hood  as  outlined  in  Section  11.

•  R em ove  the  ra d ia to r  and  shroud  as  outlined  in 

Section  13.

ON  CS  40-50-60,  MS  50,  SS  40-50  SERIES:

•  R em ove  the  fron t  end  sheet  m etal  (with  hood  and 

rad iator  attached)  as  outlined  in  Section  11.

ON  PS  10-20-30-40  SERIES:

•  R em ove  the  engine  box  and  hood  as  outlined  in 

Section  11.

•  R em ove  the  battery.
•  R em ove  the  rad iator  and  shroud  as  outlined  in 

Section  13.

ON  TS  50  and  60  SERIES:

•  R em ove  the  radiator,  rad iator  support  and  shroud 

as  outlined  in  Section  13.

•  Disconnect  shift  linkage  at  con trol  island.
•  D isconnect  choke  cable  at  carb u retor.
•  Disconnect  em ergen cy  brake  cable  at  em ergen cy 

brake  and  retaining  brackets.

•  Rem ove  bolts  retaining  con trol  island  to  support 

and  swing  con trol  island  forw ard .

•  Disconnect  hoses  at  rad iator  surge  tank.
•   Rem ove  bolts  retaining  surge  tank  to  island  sup­

port  and  rem ove  surge  tank.

•  Disconnect  th rottle  cable  at  carb u retor  and  r e ­

taining brackets.
