TR A N S M IS SIO N FLUID
T ran sm ission flu id le v e l should be checked with tran s­
m ission w arm and s e le c to r le v e r in " P ” P a rk position
( " N ” N eu tral position on 30 S eries T ru ck s), e v e ry tim e
engine o il le v e l is checked o r as sp e c ifie d in Section 0
when engine o il is changed.
C A U TIO N : Since the Turbo H yd ra -M a tic 400
tran sm ission is v e r y sen sitive to o il le v e l,
s p e c ial precautions should be taken when check-
ing the o il le v e l, to insure against an o v e r fill.
T ra n sm ission fluid should be changed as sp ecified in
Section 0.
Fluid Checking Procedure
Transmission a t O p eratin g Tem perature
W ith the tran sm ission hot (a fter v e h icle has been driven
at least 15 m ile s ), the fluid le v e l should be between the
" F U L L ” m ark and 1/4 inch below F U L L . The veh icle
should be le v e l with the engine idlin g and the tra n s­
m ission in P A R K .
Transmission at Room Tem perature (8 0 °F )
If the veh icle has not been driven su fficien tly to bring
the tran sm ission up to operating tem peratu re, the fluid
le v e l should be checked as follow s:

L I Range position p reven ts the tran sm ission fro m

It is v e r y important that any communication concerning
the Turbo H yd ra-M atic 400 always contain the tra n sm is­
sion s e r ia l and v e h icle iden tification number and that a ll
tran sm ission parts returned to C h evrolet M otor D ivision
always be tagged with the tran sm ission s e r ia l number.
D ADJUSTMENTS
1. Apply the parking brake, put the s e le c to r le v e r in
P A R K , and start the engine. Note: Do Not Race the
Engine. M ove the s e le c to r le v e r through each range.
2. Im m ediately check the flu id le v e l with the s e le c to r
le v e r in the P A R K position. The engine should be
running at a slow id le and the veh icle should be le v e l.
The flu id le v e l on the dipstick should be between the
"A D D ” m ark and 1/4 inch below.
3. If additional fluid is requ ired, add sufficien t fluid to
to b rin g the le v e l to 1/4 inch below the " A D D ” m ark
on the dipstick.
I f the tran sm ission flu id le v e l can be c o r r e c tly estab­
lished at room tem perature (80°F) as described, when
the transm ission reaches norm al operating tem perature,
the flu id le v e l w ill appear at the " F U L L ” mark. The
flu id le v e l is set at 1/4 inch below the " A D D ” m ark on
the dipstick to allow fo r expansion of the flu id which oc­
curs as the tran sm ission tem peratu re r is e s to its norm al
operating point of 180°F. DO N O T O V E R F IL L .
C A UTIO N: Do Not O v e r fill, as foam in g and
lo ss of fluid through the vent pipe m ight occur
as fluid heats up. If flu id is too low, e s p ecia lly
when Cold, com plete loss o f d riv e may resu lt
which can cause tran sm ission fa ilu re.
