17,000  lb.  tw o-speed  axle

Seal  should  be  in stalled  flush  with  end  of
hub.

Installation

1.  On  the  15,000  lb.  axle  with  4  inch brake,  in stall  inner 

bearin g  o il  seal  in  the  inner  b earin g  race  and p o s i­
tion  bearin g  race  on  axle  housing.

2.  Using  a  high  m elting  point  E P   b earin g  lubricant, 

lib e r a lly   pack  bearin gs  and  apply  a  ligh t  coat  on  I.D. 
o f  hub  bearin g  contact  su rface  and  O.D.  o f  axle 
housing  tube.

3.  Make  sure  inner  bearing,  o il  seal,  o il  seal  sleeve, 

axle  housing  o il  d efle c to r,  and  inner  bearin g  race  and 
o il  seal  a re  p ro p e rly   positioned.

4.  Install  hub  and  drum  assem bly  on  axle  housing,  e x e r ­

cisin g  care  so  as  not  to  damage  o il  seal  o r  dislocate 

other  internal  components.

5.  On  the  11,000,  13,500,  15,000  with  1 5 x 4   inch brake, 

and  17,000  lb.  (sin gle-sp eed )  axles,  p lace  outer  b e a r­
ing  cone  and  r o lle r   assem bly  on  axle  housing  and 

p re s s   fir m ly   into  hub  with  hand  (fig .  56).

6.  On  5200  through  15,000  lb.  with  4  inch brake  axles, 

install  thrust  w asher  so  that  tang  on  I.D.  o f washer 
is   in  keyway  on  axle  housing.

7.  Install  adjusting  nut  and  com plete  the  installation  as 

d irected   under  "B e a r in g   Adjustm ent.”

Bearing  Adjustm ent

B efo re  checking  bearin g  adjustment,  make  sure  brakes 

a re   fu lly  re le a s e d   and  do  not  drag.

Check  b earin g  play  by  grasping  tir e   at  top  and  pulling 

back  and  forth,  o r  by  using  a  p ry  bar  under  tir e .  If b e a r­

ings  a re   p ro p e rly   adjusted,  m ovem ent  o f  brake  drum  in 
rela tio n   to  brake  flange  plate  w ill  be  b a re ly   noticeable 

and  wheel  w ill  turn  fr e e ly .  If  m ovem ent  is   e x c essive, 

adjust b earin gs  as  follow s:

1.  R em ove  axle  shaft  and  ra is e   veh icle  until  wheel  is 

fr e e   to  rotate.

2.  D isengage  tang  o f  nut  lock  fro m   locknut  and  rem ove 

them  from   axle  housing  tube.

3.  Use  appropriate  tool  as  listed   fo r  the  sp ecified   axle:

a.  J-2222  fo r  5200  and  7200  lb.  axles.

b.  J-0870  fo r  11,000  and  13,500  lb.  axles.

c.  J-22343  fo r  15,000  lb.  single  and  tw o-speed  axles. 

M50  d rivin g  and  tra ilin g   axles,  and  17,000  lb. 

tw o-speed  axle.

NOTE: 

T o o l  J-22343  should  be  rew orked  by 

grinding  3/32  inch  o ff the  s ix  prongs  as  shown  in 

F igu re  57.

d.  J-7341  fo r  17,000  lb.  single  speed  axle.

Adjust 

wheel 

b earin gs  according  to  the  follow ing 

p roced u re.

4.  Tighten  inner  adjusting  nut  to  sp ecified   torque  at  the 

same  tim e  rotating  hub  to  make  sure  a ll  bearing 
su rfaces  a re   in  contact.  Then  back  o ff  inner  nut  to 
sp ecified   amount  o f turn-back  (fig .  58).

5.  Install  tanged  nut  lock  against  the  inner  adjusting  nut. 

A lig n   inner  adjusting  nut  so  short  tang  o f  nut  lock 
w ill  engage  n earest  slot  on  inner  adjusting  nut.  If it 

is  n ecessary  to  rotate  the  adjusting  nut  to  make  tang 

align  c o rre c tly ,  rotate  the  nut  sligh tly  clock w ise  for 
b a r r e l  r o lle r   type  b earin gs  and  cou n ter-clock w ise 
fo r  tapered  r o lle r   b earin gs.  Bend  tang  o v e r  into  p o­

sition  o f adjusting  nut  slot.
