HEATER AND AIR CONDITIONING 1A-18
COMPRESSOR OIL
Special r e frig e ra tio n lubricant should be used in the
system .
This o il is as fr e e fro m m oisture and con
tam inants as it is p ossib le to attain by human p ro cesses.
T h is condition should be p re s e rv e d by im m ediately cap
ping the bottle when not in use.
See " A i r Conditioning System C ap a cities" fo r the total
system o il capacity.
Due to the p o ro sity o f the re frig e ra n t hoses and con
nections, the system re frig e ra n t le v e l w ill show a definite

INSPECTION AND
PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION
1. Check that engine exhaust is suitably ventilated.
2. Check the b elt fo r p ro p er tension.
3. W ith controls positioned fo r operation of the system ,
operate the unit fo r ten minutes at approxim ately
2000 rpm .
O b serve the clutch pulley bolt to see that
the co m p resso r is operating at the sam e speed as
the clutch pulley.
Any speed variation indicates
clutch slippage.
4. B e fo re turning off the engine, check the sight glass
to see that the unit has a sufficient R efrig era n t
charge.
The glass should be cle a r, although during
m ild er w eather it may show tra ces o f bubbles.
Foam
in the flo w indicates a low charge. No liquid vis ib le
and no tem peratu re d iffe re n tia l between com p ressor
inlet and outlet lin es, indicates no charge.
5. Check r e frig e ra n t hose connections:
" O " ring Connections - Check torque of fittin gs as
charted la te r in this section under "R e frig e ra n t Line
C onnections;" retorqu e if required.
Leak test the
com plete system .
Hose Clamp Connections - If clamp s crew torque is
le s s than 10 in. lb., retighten to 20-25 in. lbs. Do
not tighten to new hose sp ecification s o r hose leakage
m ay occur.
Leak test the com plete system .
6. If there is evidence o f an o il leak, check the com
p re s s o r to see that the o il charge is satisfactory.
NOTE:
A slight amount of o il leakage at the
co m p resso r fron t seal is considered norm al.
7. Check the system con trols fo r p ro p er operation.
6 0 0 0 MILE INSPECTION
1. Check unit fo r any indication of a re frig e ra n t leak.
2. If there is an indication o f an o il leak, check the
co m p resso r fo r p ro p er o il charge.
NOTE:
A slight amount of o il leakage at the
co m p resso r fron t seal is considered norm al.
3. Check sight glass fo r p ro p er charge of R e fr ig e r
ant-12.
4. Tighten the com p resso r b race and support bolts and
check the belt tension.
5. Check hose clamp connections as in Step 5 of " P r e -
D e liv e ry Inspection.”
PERIODIC SERVICE
• Inspect condenser re g u la rly to be sure that the fins
re fr ig e r a n t, a low re frig e ra n t le v e l w ill cause a danger
ous lack of lubrication. T h e re fo re the re frig e ra n t charge
in the system has a definite tie -in with the amount o f o il
found in the com p resso r and an in su fficien t charge may
eventually lead to an o il build-up in the evaporator.
COMPRESSOR SERIAL NUMBER
The com p resso r s e ria l number is located on the s e ria l
number plate on top of the co m p ressor. The s e ria l num
b e r consists of a s e rie s of numbers and le tte rs . This
s e r ia l number should be referen ced on a ll fo rm s and
correspon den ce related to the serv ic in g of this part.
PERIODIC SERVICE
are not plugged with lea ves o r other fo reig n m aterial.
• Check evaporator drain tubes re g u la rly fo r d irt o r
restrictio n s.
• At least once a y e a r, check the system fo r prop er
re frig e ra n t charge and the fle x ib le hoses fo r b r ittle
ness, w ear o r leaks.
• E very 6000 m iles check sight glass fo r low r e fr ig
erant le v e l.
• Check belt tension regu la rly.
INSTALLING C H A R G IN G STATION TO CHECK
SYSTEM OPERATION
1. Four Season System - The low p ressu re fittin g is
located on the P O A valve. The high p ressu re fitting
is located on the m u ffler (fig. 28).
NOTE:
The connector assem bly consists of in
le t (suction) and outlet (discharge) lines with the
freo n hoses swaged to the m etal lin es (fig. 28).
Roof-M ounted and GM C h evrolet System s - The low
p ressu re fittin g is located on the connector block and
the high p ressu re fittin g on the m u ffler (fig. 28).
2. Install Gauge Adapters J-5420 and J-9459 onto the
high and low p ressu re gauge lines.
3. W ith the engine stopped, rem ove the caps fro m the
cored va lve gauge fittin gs.
4. Be certain all va lves on charging station are closed.
5. Connect high p ressu re gauge line to high p ressu re
gauge fitting.
CAUTIO N:
When rem ovin g gauge lin es from
the fittin gs, be sure to rem ove the adapters
from the fittin gs rather than the gauge lines
from the adapters.
6. See F igu re 25. Turn high p ressu re control (2) one
turn
cou n ter-clockw ise (open).
C rack open low
p ressu re control (1) and allow re frig e ra n t gas to hiss
fro m low p ressu re gauge line fo r three seconds,
then connect low p ressu re gauge line to low p re s
sure gauge fitting.
7. System is now ready fo r perform an ce testing.
PERFORMANCE TEST
T h is test may be conducted to determ ine if the s y s
tem is p erfo rm in g in a s a tisfa cto ry manner and should
be used as a guide by the servicem a n in diagnosing
trouble within the system .
The follow in g fixed condi
tions must be adhered to in o rd e r to make it possible to
