Locating and Correcting Cable Disconnections
Section 10-4
The following table explains how to correct problems with network communi-
cations based on the nature of the problems.
Communications
conditions
Probable
disconnection(s)
Possible remedy
Communications
applications can con-
tinue operating.
Both optical fibers
disconnected at one
location
One optical fiber dis-
connected at one
location
1.
Locate the disconnection point by checking each node’s ring status word
or connecting to one of the nodes with the support software (CX-Net in
CX-Programmer or Controller Link Support Software Ver. 2.00 or later.)
2.
Check the power supply and backup power supply at the nodes indicat-
ed by the “node address of disconnected node” entries (bits 0 to 5 and
bits 8 to 13 of the ring status word.) Correct any problems that are found.
3.
Check the optical fiber cables and connectors at the nodes indicated by
the “node address of disconnected node” entries (bits 0 to 5 and bits 8
to 13 of the ring status word.) Correct any problems that are found.
4.
If the problem is not resolved with steps 2 and 3, it is necessary to plan
a system shutdown for maintenance. Shut down the system and replace
the following components to remove the component causing the prob-
lem:
• The cable and connectors between the affected nodes
• The affected Controller Link Unit(s) (1 or 2 Units)
One optical fiber dis-
connected at two
locations
1.
Locate the disconnection point by checking each node’s ring status word
or connecting to one of the nodes with the support software (CX-Net in
CX-Programmer or Controller Link Support Software Ver. 2.00 or high-
er.)
2.
Check the power supply and backup power supply at the nodes indicat-
ed by the “node address of disconnected node” entries (bits 0 to 5 and
bits 8 to 13 of the ring status word) and any nodes in between. Correct
any problems that are found.
3.
Check the optical fiber cable connection at the interface indicated by the
Disconnected Interface Flag (bit 6 of the ring status word) for the node
indicated in bits 0 to 5. Correct any problems that are found.
4.
Check the optical fiber cable connection at the interface indicated by the
Disconnected Interface Flag (bit 14 of the ring status word) for the node
indicated in bits 8 to 13. Correct any problems that are found.
5.
Communications
applications cannot
continue operating
normally
Both optical fibers
disconnected at two
or more locations
The information reflected in the ring status words may differ from node to
node, so the disconnection locations must be corrected in order.
3.
Check the optical fiber cables and connectors at the nodes indicated by
the “node address of disconnected node” entries (bits 0 to 5 and bits 8
to 13 of the ring status word.) Correct any problems that are found.
4.
Repeat steps 1 through 3 until all of the disconnections are corrected.
5.
If the problem is not resolved with steps 1 through 4, it is necessary to
plan a system shutdown for maintenance. Shut down the system and re-
place the following components to remove the component causing the
problem:
• The cable and connectors between the affected nodes
• The affected Controller Link Unit(s) (1 or 2 Units)
