IGNITION SYSTEM
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
NOTICE
• The ECM m a y be dam aged i f dropped. A lso , i f the connecto r is disconnected w hen cu rre n t is flo w in g , the excessive
voltage m a y dam age the ECM. A lw a ys tu rn the ig n itio n sw itch OFF before servicing.
• Use spark p lu g s w ith the co rre ct heat range. U sing spark p lu g s w ith an in co rre ct heat range can dam age the engine.
• Som e electrical com ponents m ay be d am aged if term inals or connectors are connected or disconnected w hile the igni
tion switch is ON and current is present.
• W hen servicing the ignition system, alw ays follo w the steps in the troubleshooting sequence (page 20-4).
• This m otorcycle's ICM is built into the ECM.
• The ignition tim ing does not norm ally need to be adjusted since the ECM is factory preset.
• A faulty ignition system is often related to poor connections. Check those connections before proceeding. Make sure the
battery is adequately charged. Using th e starter m otor with a w eak battery results in a slow er engine cranking speed as
well as no spark at the spark plug.
• For PGM-FI troubleshooting inform ation (page 6-11).
