CYLINDER HEAD/VALVE
CYLINDER COMPRESSION
To measure the
cylinder
compression o f
each cylinder,
remove only one
plug at a time.
To avoid discharging
the battery, do not
operate the starter
m otor for more
than seven
seconds.
W arm up the engine to norm al operating tem pera
ture.
Stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug caps and
rem ove one spark plug at a tim e.
Install a com pression gauge into the spark plug
hole.
Operate the N/D clutch to the neutral.
Open the th ro ttle all the way and crank the engine
w ith the starter m o to r until the gauge reading stop
rising.
The m axim um reading is usually reached w ith in 4-7
seconds.
Com pression pressure:
1,569 ± 98 kPa (16.0 ± 1.0 k g f/c m 2, 227.6 ± 14 psi) at
400 m in '1 (rpm)
Low com pression can be caused by:
- Blow n cylin d e r head gasket
- Im p ro p e r valve adjustm ent
- Valve leakage
- W orn piston ring o r cylinder
High com pression can be caused by:
- Carbon deposits in com bustion cham ber or on
piston head

rubber seals.
