OMMANDS
When two BGP routers are configured as neighbors, they establish BGP peering
and exchange routing information. If changes are done to the BGP configuration,
such as filter, version or timers, at a later point, the BGP connection must be reset
for the changes to take effect.
For changes that apply to the BGP connection between two neighbors, a hard
reset is required for these changes to take effect. This will reset the BGP session,
and all routes in the BGP table from this neighbor will be lost.
A soft reset does not reset the BGP session. A soft reset updates the routing table
for inbound and/or outbound routing updates. This soft reset allows the dynamic
exchange of route refresh requests and routing information between BGP routers,
and the subsequent re-advertisement of the respective outbound routing table.
There are outbound and inbound soft resets. An inbound soft reset is required for
changes to the routing policy for a specific peer, such as route-maps, distribute-
lists, prefix-lists, and filter-lists that affect the inbound updates. An outbound soft
reset is required for the policy changes affecting outbound updates.
•
When soft reset is used to send a new set of updates to a neighbor, it is called
outbound soft reset
. For this type of reset, the connection is not reset and the
inbound routing table is not affected.
•
When soft reset is used to generate inbound updates from a neighbor where both
neighbors support the route refresh capability, it is called
dynamic inbound soft
reset
. Route refresh capability is advertised in the OPEN message and no pre-
configuration is required. This does not reset the BGP session.
•
To use soft reset when both BGP peers do not support the route refresh capability,
configured inbound soft reset
can be used. This requires pre-configuration, it
stores all received inbound routing-policy updates without modification.
