PSTN G
ATEWAY
Third party product is to be used as a PSTN gateway. It is to be connected to the
LAN for which the OmniAccess product provides access and networking support.
The general requirement for PSTN gateway is to make PSTN to IP and IP to
PSTN calls. It converts voice calls, in real time, between the PSTN and an IP
network. The primary functions of a PSTN gateway include voice compression/
decompression, echo cancellation, call routing, and control signaling.
OmniAccess call server treats PSTN gateway as a bunch of IP phones only. It is
the responsibility of the PSTN gateway to provide proper connectivity to PSTN.
The gateway chosen should have the Lifeline feature. It provides support for
communications when there is a complete power failure at the branch office
where OA-700 is deployed. Complete power failure may lead to non-functioning of
OA-700 and partner PSTN gateway product. Lifeline provides a relay for
connecting FXO and FXS ports directly so that calls can me made using analog
phones via PSTN connected to the FXO port.
IP P
HONES
Configuration of IP phones is not done on OA-700. IP phones can be configured
via software images loaded onto them using TFTP server configured on the OA-
700.

It is good to have the following features configured on OA-700 for enhanced voice
functionality.
•
TFTP Server- To provide the base for provisioning of the IP phones. For more
information on TFTP server configuration on OA-700, see
“TFTP (Trivial File
Transfer Protocol) Server”
•
DHCP Server - To provide the base dynamic assignment of IP addresses to the IP
phones. For more information on DHCP server configuration on OA700, see
“DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server”
•
CAC (Call Admission Controller) - CAC analyzes SIP messages and makes the
decision to accept or reject the call. It avoids network congestion by dropping
connection requests that cannot be serviced with the required QoS parameters.
For more information on CAC configuration on OA-700, see
“Call Admission
Controller”
